I concur with jayemm, however be a bit gentle with them as they're not yet fully up to speed with the procedure - early days yet no doubt. I was just told initially that I could only request PPR on the day of the flight, which makes early arrivals at EGSY impossible. It was quickly sorted out though - you can request in advance.

The sign/fax-back procedure is a once-off procedure, subsequent PR requests won't require it as long as they have your signed form on file. Apparently the sign / fax back procedure is a CAA requirement, not the airport or the council being petty.

I'll cetainly be dropping in as it's only 15 mins from home - but of course I have to go to Gamston/Netherthorpe to get the aircraft, so until there's something to hire at Sheffield the distance is rather academic. Unless someone is interested in forming a group - now there's a thought...

Incidentally, I didn't realise that the NDB was off unless requested - it was fine a few weeks ago when I tracked into it. Also, unless things have changed in the last couple of months the DME was working fine (even though the ILS isn't available). Where did this information come from - was it a reliable source?

Well I visited this weekend. Not many other aircraft were there this weekend due wx (so anyone ppruning from EGSY knows exactly who I am now :))

They are friendly, helpful and with the run of the whole of the now surplus-to-requirements scheduled terminal, including a cafe with the obligatory bacon butties, it's one of the better-equipped GA fields you'll visit, from a hospitality perspective. They didn't want to publish their new SE status because they have lots of staff away due to the easter hols. They will in due course. Even so they have had lots of interest already. There were several people enquiring about moving aircraft from Gamston to be based at EGSY, however they don't have much parking, so if you are thinking about this, move fast. There seems to be a PA38 based there already doing lessons and trial flights, plus there's an Arrow in the hangar.

The flying restrictions aren't half as onerous as they seem when read - they basically want to keep traffic as much as possible over the 40 degree or so sector of countryside east of the field. However most of the circuit and the 10 approach / 28 climb out is over built up areas, so stay within gliding range if possible, plus there is a large noise-sensitive village (Treeton I think) on the 28 approach/10 climbout at 3nm.

The fueller didn't have any oil, which I found rather strange.

All in all well worth a visit.

with the wx at the weekend I'm surprised you could see Sheffield, let alone EGSY!

That will teach me to read the Notams before posting next time.

Anyone know how to get the new airfield chart for Sheffield...as the one on the AIS website still says single-engined ops are banned?

How often to AIS update their site..I'd have expected it to be more upto date than it seems to be?
