Ptosis
 

Posted this in the Medical section and nobody's bitten yet. Just wondered if any Private Pruners had direct experience. I'll happily delete whichever thread gets less activity...

I have a Class 2 medical and recently went to see a specialist as one of my eye-lids has started to droop a little. I've seen a specialist who said it is pretty mild (2 mm I think he said) and that he will operate if I like or not - my choice.

Before I contact my AME for advice I just wondered if anyone has any experience of this condition and its implications for maintaining my Class 2 status.

Although not a pilot, a friend of mine had this operation for the same condition about six weeks ago. He recovered very quickly and his eyesight(eyeball) was utterly unaffected, apart from the obvious benefit of no longer having a droopy eyelid.

If I were suffering from the same complaint, I wouldn't hesitate to get the op, and I would be confident it wouldn't affect my flying either in the real world or my ability to pass a class 2 medical.

That's exactly what (s)he's there for. They're not two headed dragons - and in the extremely unlikely event that (s)he does pull your class 2 then there would be a good reason for it!

The CAA website has PART-MED references which should also provide guidance/advice for you. Failing that download it from the EASA website.

Sorry to sound harsh - but the horses mouth is often the best source....

That's not harsh in the slightest - I fully intend to consult him. I'm just interested to see if I can compare notes with other folks in the same boat. Will check out the websites too - thanks for the tip.

Ptosis in itself unlikely to be a problem. The question would be why you've developed a ptsosis now and whether it's likely to signify any other problems. There are multitudinous underlying causes for a ptosis most of which won't be an issue, and some of which might.

I trust you've had all this looked into already?
