I believe the UK (except Hampshire apparantly) finally gave up its resistance, and joined the rest of europe, and most of the world by adopting the Hectopascal thingeys as the standard a couple of years ago.

Up here in 'God's Own County' we use nothing but 'Thingeys'. I cant remember the last time I heard the 'M word'

I hesitate to correct such an excellent comment but, I don't think it was Cecil Rhodes. Somehow the name Geoffrey Boycott - who ever he is is - keeps creeping unbidden into what passes for my brain.

I don't go too far these days but, still fly the length and breadth of this country and have heard 'thingies' referred to just once !

Both QFE and QNH being given as just the number without reference to either 'thingies' or millibars.

I thought once you reached a thousand thingies no-one any longer cared what they were. Apparently when there are 999 of them or less there's huge ambiguity and everyone needs to know that you weren't talking millibars after all.

999 or less makes no difference. Millibars and hectothingies are the same.

To my admittedly jaundiced ear, hectopascals sounds like pretentious twaddle.

What a load of millibars some of you talk :)


Yorkshire? I can't find that on my half-mil chart 2171CD.

Last time I checked, Sheffield was still in Yorkshire - and Sheffield is most certainly on 2171CD;)

Ooh well yes, but its near the edge, and I'm too scared to go there in case I fall off the edge of the world.

I guess you must only fly when the weather is nice then, and the 'thingies' well over 1000! ;)

I know that all the English are really Danes and tighter than a matelot in Portsmouth on a Saturday night but, really, Yorkshiremen - generous? You lot are Danes with knobs on.

Sadly I'm not that well travelled. Simply that at 1000 HPa/mb or above the pressure is given as a unitless number. Below 1000 the unit is given as well. I suspect that the reason for this is exactly as you say.

You are right. The reason is to avoid confusion between 'Thingeys' and Inches of Mercury below 1000 'Thingeys' :)
