The St. James Park altitude restriction is probably because of the Olympic football games... Which should mean that there are other similar restrictions around the other football stadia being used during the games.

The same sort of person who'll fly down the Lea Valley, through the City zone, over the Thames and then South London in an SEP at less than 2500ft and then pretend that they've complied with the land-clear rule !

Everyone unfortunately! VFR zone entry and departures are always "enter (or depart) the zone via the bridges, not above 2500ft."

There are number of these dodgy VFR arrivals with no chance of a glide clear at various airports.

They usually claim that you don't have to because its for the purposes of landing. Utterly daft though.

Yup. Any aircraft not fitted with serviceable Mode-C (orS) transponder will be banned from flight in the area for the period. That's a lot of recreational and training aircraft currently based there. I believe the cost to the GA economy has been estimated in the order of several million pounds - to politicians and suchlike used to talking in Billions, this is peanuts.

Still, it's only a month. It could be worse, in fact it was going to be two months.

What land clear rule? We all fly over big cities all the time. If it goes just aim for the road or a park or a river!

That's a pretty rare thing in the UK tbh. Never flown over a city except as SLF. You haven't got the chance due to airspace restrictions and our land clear rule.

We havent got many big cities, and the most "important" is also the smallest (the city of london) which is actually part of a town (the larger town of london) so you see its not very often a problem in a small island such as ours.

I certainly don't unless I am in a twin.

And it all depends where you are and where you want to go even in the Highlands we have to skirt round flying over a city not a big one mind its just the fact that its bang in the way of going from the airport to one of the major scenic attractions in the area ie the Great Glen.

Some airports who have been surrounded by houses you just can;t if you want to land there. Then local procedures force you low VFR to keep you under the IFR inbounds.

Tiz a good job that engine failure is a very unlikely event.

As an aside, they used to build Sopwith Camels in a factory next to Newcastle town moor, and fly them from there too. And one of my hang-gliding instructors taught himself to fly by doing bunny-hops down the hillocks at the far end...
