Folks,

Has anyone flown into Bruntingthorpe or know if you can do so? Is it worth a visit? Also, any other good places to fly into with a museum or alike?

RAF Cosford is a great place to visit, the museum is second to none! The RAF are happy to accomodate private aircraft movements as long as you can provide the usual enormous insurance cover.

A friend and I took a C152 into Bruntingthorpe a few years ago. Had to request permission by phone and pre-arrange arrival time. I seem to remember a nominal landing fee paid at the gatehouse. Quite a few interesting parked aircraft to view and there was a double decker bus selling souvenirs in support of the Vulcan project...but that might be gone by now. Unless things have changed, be aware of a few "gotchas". The man on the radio (the Security Guard at the gatehouse) was very friendly and accommodating but obviously not an aviation expert, offering a choice of runways regardless of wind direction....make your own decisions! On landing, we had to swerve to avoid a massive sheet of plastic that had blown onto the runway; I believe it's used for other purposes (car testing/racing?) and it's condition is not guaranteed. Plenty of space to park but we got it wrong and ended up in no-man's-land...you really are on your own so good pre-flight planning is essential. It was generous of the owners to allow us in and good to get a new field in the logbook.

A couple of years ago, Project Propeller ran a fly-in using part of the perimeter road as a hard runway ( with a grass strip alongside as an alternative) This was immediately adjacent to the museum(?). The reason for this was that there was a car racing type event on the same day (using the main runway). So alternatives are available, but a lot of research is recommended.

Go in on a Sunday - the museum is open then, plenty of enthusiastic volunteers to chat-away to.
£10 landing fee, grass runway only (800M) very smooth.
No help on the radio, or to park.
Park on the grass in front of the Comet.
Excellent afternoon out BUT BEWARE.......eat before you go.........No food of any kind to be had on site!!

Yorkshire Air Museaum on site, but separate entity to the airfield operation.

I flew in last year for one of their "Thunder Days", when they do fast taxy runs with the Nimrod, Comet, Victor, Lightnings and many others. Brilliant stuff. Next open day is on Sunday 29 May. Well worth the visit

As Jez says, well worth a visit. We had a great afternoon. Very friendly people.
