Whirlybird, yup, chuck the details in my email please, very interested in how this works. By the way its a long way to go to receive a trophy isnt it?

Aerobatfink,
I sent off the article a couple of days ago, when my co-pilot finally stopped finding things she wanted changing. I can't complain; it was her attention to detail that did a lot towards helping us win. I'm good on the big things - like deciding to enter when I'd been flying barely a year (the first time, when we started planning), and thinking of themes, but not so good on detail. So now it depends on Pilot's editor. Thanks for finding that website; must be new(ish) I think. I don't know of anywhere you read about old entries; wish I did though! Kermie, All the details are on their website, which Aerobatfink found. Yes, a long way to come for a trophy, but gives you a good excuse to cross half the world for a holiday doesn't it. :) Aerbabe, If I do the half competition in a helo next year, I might be looking for a photographer, a lightweight one so I can carry full fuel. Utterly impossible for one person to fly and take photos in an R22, unless you have three hands. Anyway Aerbabe, you interested? [ 09 January 2002: Message edited by: Whirlybird ]
|
Ooooh... yes yes yes yes yes please Whirly! Going on a diet starting right now, and buying a parachute tomorrow :) Seriously, would absolutely love to, keep me posted!
|
Aerbabe, you don't need to go on a diet; you're light enough anyway that we can carry loads of fuel and cameras and so on and still be well within limits. That's why I asked you. OK, if I can find money, time etc to do it, I'll let you know.

I got an letter from Pilot today accepting my article (and offering me filthy lucre for it too ). So you can all read about it if you want, though I don't know exactly when.
And then you'll all know who Whirly is. |
Ha! Expect us to beleive that? Everyone knows the real Whirlbird uses a nom deplume! :)

Whirly's article in Pilot!
Now at the newsagent is the issue of Pilot containing Whirly's account of winning the Dan to Dusk - rush out and buy, people!

Nice article, Whirly.
But aren't you brainy? ;) All that stuff about Ecclesiastes -- very atmospheric, very engaging. Well done. QDM |
Ooh at last! Hopefully will be able to pick up a copy tomorrow. Thanks for letting us know Lowtimer :)

VERY interesting article Whirly and a brilliant theme. Can you expand a little on where it comes from (apart from the Bible), as I've heard similar phrases in a song but didn't realise it had a Biblical root.
|
The song was Turn Turn Turn, most famously (ie the version I've got!) by the Byrds: my colleague and I think it was written by Bob Dylan. Before we were born of course...!
Great article Whirlybird, wondered if it could be you! (I hadn't seen this thread before, honest!) And well done on your win! Treadders |
Treadigraph,
Yes, that's it; I knew it from the song "Turn Turn Turn". I too have the Byrds version, but I thought Pete Seeger recorded it originally, not sure though. No, I'm not a biblical scholar    In fact, I had a hard time actually finding a copy of the bible to get the original words for our theme. How did I know it came from Ecclesiastes? Can't remember? How did I think of it? Ditto, I just suddenly found the words of the song going round my head, and thought it might work. This year's theme was much easier to think of, though not to research, fly, or write up!!! |
Whirlybird - Just read the article in Pilot and wanted to say "Congratulations". It was an extremely good read, interesting and inspirational especially for a newbie student (female at that!). Maybe there's hope for me yet :) Well done!
|
Whirlybird,
you were correct, it was Pete Seeger who recorded it originally. The credits for the latter day version are as follows "Words-adapted from The Bible, book of Ecclesiastes Music-Pete Seeger" |
Yeah, we were discussing it in the pub tonight - just checked, Dylan gets credit on four of the tracks on my "Best of" Album, but not TTT. Seeger 's the man!
What the hell does this have to do with flying - apart from Whirly's wonderful win and Yossarian in "Catch 22" screaming "turn you b**stard, turn, turn" during a mission? Cheeroh, Treadders!!! |
eveepee,
Many thanks for that. I know exactly how you feel. I started flying just under five years ago, wandering into my local airfield with some vague idea of having a few lessons to cheer myself up after a bad bout of flu. I didn't even plan as far as getting a PPL at first. And I knew virtually nothing about aircraft or flying; didn't even know anyone who'd ever learned to fly. And I didn't have a PC, so no PPRuNe. But things can change, and flying has a way of taking over your life... :) :) |
