IMC Rating required experience question

Just perused LASORS and as always things remain unclear !

Requirements to apply for the IMC:

"5 hours as Pilot in Command of aeroplanes on cross-country flights"

Cross country ?

Does this mean land-away or just any flight ?

If it means land-away then why the hell not just put that !!!

Thanks in advance.

It means outside the circuit, not necessarily land away.

It means outside the circuit, not necessarily land away.
That reference in the ANO is with regard to the privileges of an AFI or FI(R) and what they may not authorise; nothing else.

A cross country flight is either one from A to B or a flight which uses one or more preplanned turning points.

Beware also the FAA's interpretation of a 'cross country flight' differs greatly from the CAA/JAA interpretation, as many a potential IMCr to FAA/IR converter has found to their chagrin.
