AZ to IL route

I received my pilots certificate last summer, and purchased a Piper Dakota 236 (nonturbo) this past fall. I would like to travel to the Chicago area, from Phoenix in a month.
It has been suggested that I take a southern route, and avoid the mountains. Was told it would be safer and less stressful for a new pilot, although longer, that's fine with me.
My question is the route. Are there any web sites or software available to help with this? Or, can anyone suggest a general route using cities or VOR's? I will also have a Garmin 195 GPS to help navigate. Any help, suggestions, or past experiences would be GREATLY appreciated.
