Class 2 Medical
 

Sorry if this is a FAQ, but can anyone tell me roughly what a Class 2 Medical should cost?

I know an Initial class one cost £400 one year ago...........

So there's your starting point. At least you know it will be less than that!!!!!!

Evo - mine cost £130. At the time there was a thread on Medical, I think and there were definately cheaper and more expensive than this.

One good bit of advice (I think!) on the thread was to get the FAA medical paperwork done at the same time as it apparently makes life easier if you want to fly in the US. This cost another £30 - cheaper than having to have another medical!

I don't know whether the US is the only place requiring a domestic medical for hire etc., though - what about Australia? Anyone?

You don't actually need an FAA medical to fly in the US if you have a JAA medical....that is if your FAA licence is issued on the basis of your JAA licence.

"Holds a current medical certificate issued under part 67 of this chapter or a current medical certificate issued by the country that issued the person's foreign pilot license;"

Initial JAA Class 2 around 120 GBP, as you have all the extra crap like ECG. When I had it, the AME was so embarrased at the cost, he gave me the FAA one for free:-)

I paid £135 :( But I've heard of people paying well below £100
ECG is expensive - but I don't think you need another until you are 40, and the Class 2 lasts for about 5 years anyway :)

Evo7, the PFA members (only) lounge has a list of AMEs offering lower charges to PFA members. Mine was £70 :) for a Class 2 including ECG, in August 2001, compared to £135 the previous time. With an annual medical (50+....sigh) the saving more than pays the PFA subs, and then there are all the other membership benefits. I had to travel a few miles, but I combined it with a visit to a stately home with my wife, and so earnt lots of brownie points as well.

Got mine when i was sixteen that was a couple of years back £60. It all depends on age!

Bit of calling around found one for £78 - after talking to my FI about the cost of his class 1 that almost comes as a relief :)

Had mine last week cost £140 - £80 for the examination and (because I'm now officially an old fart) £60 for the ecg. Passed though! :eek:

Evo7, I paid £120 for a JAA Class II and an FAA Class II (inc ECG) this year. Having said that, the AME 'forgot' to include a student pilot certificate which delayed my solo. I presume you pay for what you get!

One thing though, if you're ever thinking about going onwards from your PPL then forget the Class II and plump straight for the Class I. I stupidly got both about 4 months apart. :rolleyes:

£60 for Class II (aged 35) and ECG. Would have been £55 but I forgot to tell him I was a member of the PFA - Doh.

Search the PFA site - very useful.

Got mine on Friday, and hopefully there aren't going to be problems. Biggest worry is eyesight. I'm OK as far as I can tell, but outside the limits for a Class 1 so I'll never get to fly Concorde... :rolleyes:
