A couple were rescued from a tiny plane after it spun out of control and hurtled onto a country road.

The pilot struggled to keep control of the light plane as it bounced on the Tarmac near a remote airfield on Saturday.

Firefighters freed him and his wife who were both trapped in the wreckage of the twin-engined Piper PA28. They were both said to have serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Take off

The aircraft had taken off from Compton Abbas airfield en route to Blackbushe Airport in Hampshire on Saturday.

But the 43-year-old pilot reported engine problems shortly after take-off and turned back.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "The plane was heading for the runway when it clipped some wire fencing on the airfield and spun off onto the road at the end of the airstrip."

Investigation

Air Accident Investigators launched an immediate probe into the cause of the crash.

A spokesman said: "The injured couple have been taken to hospital. They do not have life-threatening injuries, but that is not to say they have not been seriously injured."

The couple, who have not been named, come from Feltham in west London.

They were both taken to Odstock Hospital in Salisbury, one by ambulance and the other by helicopter.

I hope when I hit the sod for my final landing they get it right.

Wire at the end of the runway at Compton? One end is a field and the other is a large drop....The only road runs parallel to the runway and it has large trees on one side, not suitable for twin engined PA-28's.....

once flew as P1 in a twin engine pa-28,nearly shat meself when I saw that extra engine dangling from the port wing,especially when the other one was on the nose!!Needed one f*** of a lot of left rudder that day I can tell you!

I heard the reports on 'normal' TV and saw it on teletext and thought the reportings on those were fairly restrained. Must be tabloidism at Sky.
There is another road to the one parallel to the runway - it runs N/S at the western end of the airfield, between the 08 threshold and the massive drop into the plain.

there is sometimes wire at the end of the westerly runway at Compton Abbas , as the overrun is used for grazing sheep in the winter and there was a fatal accident there about 18 mths ago when a 172 cleared the road after " turning back with a problem"

I thought that 172 crash was due to the seat rails failing,this caused the pilots seat to shoot back and the pilot pulled the stick back, which stalled the aircraft. All 172 had to have the seat rails replaced due to this crash.

Same thing happened in Fort Lauderdale Executive. Nice old boy didn't have his seat fully secured when he ajusted it. Rolled back on initial climb out and stalled into West Commercial Boulevard. Good to check seat is poperly secure, ie locked into position and check that the stoppers are in place at the end of the seat runners. Seems obvious, but not always remembered on a hasty pre-flight.

No one would want a P.A. 28 let alone one with two engines!!!! or is there such bad taste out there? only joking before I get a load of abuse. bye

Was a PA28R ARROW from European Flyers of Blackbushe G--RV.
Apparently engine failure(less than 25 hours old} chap picked field and found out when on final that children on sleds were in field turned to adjacent field which was inappropriate a/c written off. Pilot and wife injured wife quite badly.

so there is the wreckage sticking out into the road (tail), as he was just short of the undershoot (undershot the undershoot?). peeps are still stuck in the aircraft.

joe public in their cars travelling between blanford and shaftesbury are getting all cross because one lane of the road is blocked and the second is dificult to pass.

The last compton fatality with the C172 was the seat rails. nasty to see that
