PPL Study Material
 

I'm shortly to embark on my PPL. From speaking to one or two schools about text books, it seems that once one has gained their PPL, the Air Pilot's Manuals/Confuser etc. seem to be no longer required (been there, done that, looking ahead now).

IF that is the case, if anyone in the East Midlands/Nottingham area wishes to pass on any useful study books/material, maybe we can strike a deal.

Yoh - me too. It's expensive enough without splashing out on books for them later to gather dust.

Come on guys and gals, they're only taking up room and you've progessed beyond that now!

Sorry, no way. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that I need them. I learned everything at high speed to pass the exams and get that licence quick, then over the months and years realised that I knew very very little, and that the more I knew properly about meteorology, air law etc, the better. So I'm going to go through them again - I really will, some day. But of course, this may just be me - I expect everyone else learned it all properly the first time, hasn't forgotten any of it, and is now on to higher things!

A practical point too; the books quickly get out of date, and have changed a lot in the last couple of years with JAR coming along. If you can afford to do a PPL you can afford a few up-to-date books; go out and buy your own. Some of the mail order catalogues - usually free in "Flyer" or "Pilot" give you a good reduction if you get everything you need all at once.

Fair do's - I'm just starting as well, and any reasonable way to get SOME costs down is, I feel, warranted. Maybe we can afford to fly IF we prune (excuse the pun) it to the bone?

Personally I don't like letting go of ANY book, BUT the suggestion came from schools so perhaps there is some validity in it.

Ta anyway.

I've got a couple of q & a books you can have... could be of use... questions are questions no matter what the syllabus.

Watch out when using older Air Law books, as they can fall out of date surprisingly quickly.

Incidentally, I reckon that the Air Law exam was the worst of the lot. Whoever created the questions went for the 'tricky-dicky catch-you-out' technique. Complete pain in the proverbial as they don't actually test your knowledge in a fair way.

My advice? Go on then...

Don't just use the books as a mechanism for passing some inconvenient exams. Read the various books carefully, as most of the information in them is highly relevent to flying. More importantly, some seemingly trivial point hidden deep in one of the books may well save your life one day. (Sorry about the drama).

Next, buy an up-to-date PPL Confuser. That will ensure that you actually pass the damn exams.

Tricky Woo, sound advice. Yep, I think I'd agree with every single word of that. Wish I'd heard all that before I did the damned exams.

sorry if this is a dull question but what's a PPL Confuser and where do I get one?

I understand it's a book listing virtually all questions that can be expected to be asked on the multiple-choice exams, with detailed explanations as to why a particular answer is so.

Apparently invaluable - so probably is.

Amazon don't have it listed - but I've e-mailed them to check - but it is available at schools, and in Flyer and Pilot ads.

IMHO Jeremy Pratt's Q & A for the PPL is a better book to aid study for the JAR PPL than the confuser. It worries me that there is a perception among some that by using the confuser, you can learn 'parrot fashion' the answers to the exam questions and thus skip learning the subject. Surely the idea of this kind of study material is to assist the student gain sufficient knowledge to progress to being a safe pilot rather than just passing exams.

I use the Confuser to test myself at the end of the study material.Its great for this,but learn the subject first.You cant test yourself on what you havent learned.
