Compass Position
 

My compass is situated on top of the instrument shield and in the middle of the aircraft as is common on most types. It would suite us to reposition the compass directly in front of the P1 position which involves moving the compass a few inches to the left. The compass would then no longer be on the exact centre line. The immediate reaction from our engineer was that it probably wasnt a problem but then again might present difficulties during the compass swing checks. I think he also thought that all the installations he had seen were on the centre line so there must be some good reason for this. Any thoughts much appreciated. Reason for the move is it is the only suitable position for a GPS.

I can't see it matters if you move it. All parts of the aircraft point in the same direction not just the centre line. However in the middle is a good place for most people - can be seen by both pilots and is the line of vision of neither. Some aircraft have it on the 'ceiling' rather than ontop of the 'dashboard'. Wouldn't that work for you?

Glad to get your reply. Yes, thought of the ceiling but a centre handle unfortunately gets in the way.

How would it not being on the centreline affect it with regard to turning or acceleration/deceleration errors? I imagine it would need to be recalibrated for deviation as it will have moved relative to the aircraft's own magnetic field and be closer/further away from pitot heads etc.

Just thoughts off the top of my head. I'm sure someone will stamp on me for being dense! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
