Scilly Isles and Cornwall

I may need to travel between Cornwall and Scilly Isles (St Mary's Island) in my job (An excuse to fly !!) I don't want to take current aircraft down there in case the weather turns and I am unable to get home, to the othe side of the country. Any suggestions for the best Cornwall based airfield, aircraft hire/purchase/groupshare ? Anyone fly that crossing in summer or winter ?

Knowing nothing about your experience, it is worth pointing out that St Mary's can be a fairly demanding airfield as you will probably have spotted. It would be worthwhile making sure that whatever you end up hiring, it is something that you feel very comfortable with (particularly speed control) before shooting off to the Scillies.

Call Culdrose LARS or Lands End (St Just) for separation with the civil helicopter service and Lands End traffic, and for coasting out. Change to St. Mary's half-way there.
St. Mary's airfield is very hump-backed, like an upturned soup-plate - get down before you reach the top of the hump, or you'll float all the way down to the sea at the end of the runway.
Helpful ATC will probably suggest a low pass first, if you tell them first visit.
Nice part of the world. If there's sea-fog on the Cornish North coast, try the South coast - and vice versa.

Is St. Mary's the only airfield in the UK that is closed on Sundays?

No Yogi
Barra, Benbecula, Campbeltown, Islay, Lerwick, Scatsta, Stornoway, Tiree, Unst and Wick all observe the Sabbath, though HIA will permit out of hours operation at some of these, subject to an indemnity of (I think) £5 million.

I've flown out of Lerwick, Unst, and Fetlar and Whalsay on a Sunday, no problem.
Edited for typo.

Try Bodmin, where there are currently aircraft for sale as well as hire. You can also brush-up on your short-field technique!
