What's wrong with this picture?
I know we have discussed this many times here before....
I was reminded of the need for partial panel pratice, during my routine flight home this afternoon... http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/o...R/IMG_0826.jpg |
What a stupid device!
|
Doesnt look like an origonal fit item to me. Maybe a demodification is required?
|
Looks like a pitot cover which is supposed to uncover the orifice once one is airborne.
Very clever, but in this case it isn't working quite right :) |
He's flying backwards.:ok:
|
This is a common fit on vintage machines. Luscomes and the like have them and it is part of the DI to ensure it is free and well lubed. If it sticks and you know the aircraft a slight dive will free it, (yes it has happened to me).

Must be pretty well seized. A lump of pumice will shift it :E

Yes, it is definately an "aftermarket" part. It was on the plane when I bought it last week, and has worked perfectly for the 2500 miles of flying I did to get it home. I had no reason to suspect that it would jam for a flight of 10 minutes. It was free during the walk around. Interestingly, neither high speed nor low speed flight would unstick it (I tried both). It happly came unstuck when I hit some turbulence during a turn, as I reversed course after checking the windsock.
It worked fine when I got back on the ground! It will be removed today, and replaced with the customary red cover, which hopefully I will not forget to remove (again). |
Just allow the wing to fully stall, that will release it.

Have you sold the 150 then? The 182 is a wonderful plane, but after paying to fill the tanks with that blue fuel, all the way across Canada, I even more appreciate the economy of the 150! |
...bit of 3-in-1 and she'll be good as new! :ok:
|
Whats wrong in this picture?...There's a scratch on the window.
Its a Cessna () |
Can't you carry a stick open window and push it back :D
|
I've flown a number of aircraft fitted with one of those devices. Only ever had one stick once.
|
rr its a high wing aircraft?
|
I had one freeze shut in a 1946 C140 once. Was taking my kid out for a winter flight. Slush on the taxiway apparently flung off the wheel and froze it. I tried to unstick it by running up to redline, no luck. Otherwise it has been trouble free.

Pilot Dar, over the years I have found that it is beneficial to use common items for some tasks like protecting a pitot tube.
Condoms work real well and as long as you don't puncture it it can still be used as a marriage saver when away from home. |
Chuck, do they come in bright red, with a "remove before flight" flag on them?
|
They come in red, but you need to attach your own " remove before flight / put on before fun " flag on them.
Don't they teach you guys anything useful in school? |
As Rod said, most Luscombes have them, however this one appears to be wrong for the pitot.
Luscombes have a pitot that is made from a piece of simple aluminium tube which comes out of the leading edge, bends down and then forward so the opening is below and forward of the LE. The pitot in the pic is much fatter and the cover is not designed to fit it as can be seen by the fact that the fixing clip has been opened out and secured by safety wire rather than the manufacturer supplied pinch bolt. If something's not being used in the way intended by the designer it's a fair bet it won't work properly. By the look of it it's the one intended for a 1/4 inch tube being used on something much fatter. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalo...s/10-02000.jpg Apropos of the suggestions of replacing it with a "remove before flight" jobby, it's a matter of balancing the risk of something automatic not working against the risk of the PIC failing to remove it on pre-flight and replace it after flight innit? |
