Grounded!
 

Over the holiday period I had the misfortune to damage my left ankle, which is now in a cast. It has happened before - the left one has been a bit 'iffy' for years - but in the past it's not been this bad. It seems that it is against the law to drive in this condition. Assuming that I could physically get in the plane and be comfortable with the pedals, could I legally fly?

And do I need to contact my local CAA doc, as the cast will be on for at least 4 weeks, or should it be Gatwick?

Constructive comments would be appreciated.

Looking at the wx it looks as if ANY flying is unlikely for a while around here anyway!

I'm fairly sure that you need to have been signed off by your AME - given this change in state of health since your last medical. Wouldn't do any harm to call Gatwick to check.

But being sensible about this, you still need to find something which doesn't require use of your ankle. Something like an HM1000, or one of the Paraplegic modified Shadows at Old Sarum?

Any medical condition that affects your performance needs to be declared . Im pretty sure that this injury will preclude you from flying solo , but hey nothing stopping you from haveing a safety pilot

Safety pilot.... now that sounds like a Good Idea!! Just need to get a circuit in before the 90 day rule arrives on the 23rd of Jan... We normally fly two up anyway - it's much more enjoyable to share the experience. And I'll make some 'phone calls too. Thanks for all the comments. RF.

I might suggest that if you were flying on you own in that condition, you may need to think of insurance considerations if anything untoward happens. Get well soon.

Toe brakes might be a problem if your aircraft is fitted with them?

It was the legality aspect that was uppermost in my mind when I started this... I certainly wouldn't even consider a solo flight! And yes, toe brakes might well be an issue in our PA28. If I was in any doubt I'd not go, other than as a passenger.

I've just had a look at Metcheck, and there doesn't appear to be any significant change in the weather for at least a couple of weeks, so the whole thing may turn out to be academic....
