Pilot Apps for Windows mobile
 

I currently have an iphone, and there seem to be loads of brilliant Apps for it. Like Pilotwhiz, aeroweather

I have just purchased a HTC touch HD running WM6.1 Anyone recomend any good apps for it

As it has GPS why not stick Memory Map and the latest CAA Maps on there?

That is on order, I purchased the latest CAA charts from memory map. Am I correct by saying all I need is the map, I purchased one for £20. Somehow that seems too cheap. Am I missing something?

The £20 CAA MM maps do come with what looks like the actual MM program.

I have never installed the program however because I have my own version on the PC already.

The way the MM PDA software is done is that you install MM on a PC and then, with the PDA connected (the usual activesync thingy) you click on the Mobile Device -> Install Pocket Navigator option, and it just does it. Very slick. I don't think MM sell a PDA version as such.

I think it will even transfer the maps that way, though activesync is painfully slow for big files; it's quicker to manually copy the .qct file(s) to the flash card.

The other prog to consider for a pocket/pc (wm2000x) device is Oziexplorer. This is a generic moving map application which runs a wide range of maps.

Any other mobile phones good for that sort of thing? I don't really fancy the cost of either buying an i-phone or the rental monopoly through o2.

An excellent W&B program found here Marcware Weight and Balance

Pocket Airroute is a wizz wheel and converter although I use 1calc for conversions as it's easier to use. Sunrise is another free app which tells you sunset and sunrise times.

I asked not long ago if there were any Symbian based flight programs for my n95 8gb but there does not seem to be.. shame as it is more than capable.

someone needs to make some, there is definately a market for them.

I did an upgrade with O2 a couple of months ago to their O2 xda flint (also known as HTC 7510 )and use it to run Pocketfms and also Memory map it has a 5" screen that is very readable in sunlight, I don't use the keyboard just the screen velcro'd on to a yoke mount

Of course I don't user this thing as a phone would look like a complete Muppet :8 and use an ordinary phone day to day

Thanks for all the info guys. Im relieved to hear that the MM CAA charts arn't going to require me spending anymore money. Its got to be the cheapest legit mapping system out there. At that money, I dont even mind upgrading it once/twice a year.

Keep the sugestions coming, as Im still after a decent weather and hold calculator, along with any other useful apps

actually I have developed some for myself. but only in excel format. like w&B, take off & landing rolls distances along with 50ft obstacle clearance distances, headwind & cross wind component. I just enter temp & wind direction and speed the rest of the things are given to me automatically by excel. and I can develop other, but it needs time and I need to focus only on my studies.

HTC Shift
 

I have access to a HTC Shift (both WM and Vista) has anyone tried one of these device while flying for MM or other apps?

Does anyone know which app to get for aviation weather? I saw a few but they were for US only.

I know the iphone thingy has aeroweather, what is the equivilent for windows mobile?

AvBrief - PDA will provide TAF's/Metars in a very simply no fuss, and quick fashion.

Seriously, you can access the Avbrief weather service and get TAFs and METARs by going through your phone's browser. The site is basic to say the least - just a box to enter the ICAO code for the airport - but it is the easiest way without downloading any software.

I have been using the Avbrief WAP facility on my Nokia 6310i but have recently lost the phone config and was unable to get it working again, so I am now using the YAWS one which is actually a lot nicer.

My Nokia E51 should be arriving soon and that can do a lot more than my 6310i :)

Apart from tafs/metars, there isn't much one can usefully do on a small screen device. I have an old HP HX4700 PDA which can run in 640x480 and in that resolution it does a reasonable job of rendering web pages with MSLP charts etc - if you are a masochist. Been there, done that, and wasted a lot of time. I would just buy one of the tiny ~£200 "EEE" laptops which have an 8" screen and they do all the website stuff fine, and if you get the WinXP version you can do everything else on it.

Was just looking for something that would be useful for getting TAF's/METAR's etc.

Also, any other aviation apps worth a look?

Is there a graphical W&B app for Symbian phones?
