Austro engine gets EASA Type Certificate

According to a press release from Diamond, EASA have issued a Type Certificate for their Austro diesel engine, and they are now installing it on new DA42s - which must be good news for them.

Given that Exxon are refusing to refuel DA42s in the USA, I wonder what will be the effect of this note in the TC:

"The E4 engine is approved for operation with jet fuels. A minimum cetane number of 37 (determined according EN ISO 5165/ASTM D613) is recommended."

Is that information readily available, when you buy Jet A?

What about an FAA TC?

Anyway this is good news for Diamond's cash flow who can now start shifting their large number of sold but undeliverable airframes.

Personally, however, I think we are back to when the original Thielert diesel came out, and it will be a long wait to get the bugs ironed out of this one, or to make sure there are no major ones. I'd give it 5 years.

Good news - we are looking forward to working with Diamond to sort out our DA42s!
