Highest airfield in the UK
I was flicking through a Rapid flight guide looking to see which UK airfield is the highest AMSL. Anyone know which one it is?
|
Gorrilla, dunno but the highest pub in the UK is the Tan Hill Inn in Yorkshire. Hope that helps.
|
Probably Crosland Moor, 825' AMSL.
|
Dunkeswell 850'.

Hi,
Been asked before, and my field - Strathaven - isn't (drat!) the highest and it is 847ft. Come and fly-in on June 7th and 8th free camping, no landing fees, BBQ and bar. Ideal for microlights and 912 types, Very best,, Colin |
Dunkeswell is 839ft (according to my half mil.) :8
|
How about ...
Dunkeswell: 839' amsl - highest licensed Davidstow Moor: 969' amsl - highest unlicensed Treborough: 1200' amsl - highest grass strip JD :) |
If we are including gliding fields, then I assume it must be Long Mynd ~1400'
|
Hi Big Monkey, found Black Mountain Airfield at 970' so Long Mynd still wins at 1400'
|
Oxenhope is a meagre 1150ft.
|
highest strip
Best I can manage is 1345ft at Greenhow Hill. Rugged and wet.
Carlton Moor 1200 ft, like landing on a moonscape. Oxenhope 1150 ft, this evening, very pleasant. Even warm ! tth |

??
She probably was a real welder !! :O

Pah, these are all low level compared to some of the fields in South Africa :-
Ermelo - 5700ft Sweetwaters - 5800ft There are probably more airfields over 2,000ft than under it. And in Lesotho there are a couple of airfields with elevations over 8600ft !! Some people in the UK have never even flown that high !!. Then forget to factor in the 30c+ temps on some days, and try taking off with "Mixture Rich" and see what happens. Anyway, back to the thread :- Isn't LBA the highest with comemrcial traffic at 681ft ?. :) |
I recently did some flying in the Rockies and landed at Leadville, Colorado at 9,927 feet. It is supposedly the highest paved strip in North America. Climb out 2 up in a C-172 with 180 HP was 100-150 fpm.
|
Loch Avon at 2200' seems quite high  Did you take the photo? G-DRAM seems to be in a very pronounced tail-down attitude for a float plane. Is that normal for her or is it the weight of the trout in the luggage compartment? |
yeah I thought that Leeds Bradford was the highest in the UK? Hence why it was a silly place to put an airport because its always fogged out!
|
actually the highest Pub in the UK is now in the Cairngorms, at the top of the alpine train!:}
|
When it's easterly winds and the har is rolling into the vale of York and up the Wharfe valley, LBA is looking down on the top of the clouds...
