Flying in Morocco Marakech
 

Hi guys has anybody any info / advice about flying in Morocco.

I'm off to Marakech in a week or so and want to hire an aircraft locally to do some flying etc for a few days of my holiday.

Was thinking about getting in touch with Royal Aeroclub de Marakech, but cannot find email for them. Have a phone number, but don't speak French.

Any info advice would be very much appreciated.

This site has loads of info about flying in Morocco - but it's in French. Perhaps you could find someone who speaks it. I've flown there, but not hired locally, so not sure if that's possible. If you can, then it's pretty spectacular but beware hot and high conditions !!

Flew there earlier in the year (from UK). One to watch is that to buy fuel with cash at Marrakech they want you to provide evidence from the bank - signed and stamped receipt proving it was purchased in Morocco. Till receipts are NOT acceptable, nor are normal Credit Card etc! We argued for an hour (even with receipts but not stamped!). On the other hand Tangiers were more than helpful!

English is generally usable - but I would try and brush up on your French before you go, ATC etc. is fine but many airfield staff use French. They dont seem to do "open" VFR , everything is flight plans to recognised routes and you are expected to follow them (ish).

Charts seem hard to get hold off you seem to have to go into Casablanca. We used an American chart (borrowed) and marked the new reporting points when we landed in Tangiers. The guys in the office will help you file your plan and help with name pronunciation!

I did not see many local aircraft so not sure how easy it is to hire - good luck!

I'm going there on Sat for a week with duke of edinborough. Dunno how this will help but I just thought I'd ask. What is it like doing stuff that high and is it as hot as it aparently is.

I have emailed in English and French to see what response I get, hopefully they have good English speakers there as my French is poor, but can email ok using translation websites....
