Flying in Melbourne

Folks - I'm heading to Melbourne for a year or so with work and wonder if anyone can recommend any clubs / groups to buy into in that neck of the woods?

Cheers!

Depends what you want to do there?
Probably not feasible to get in and out of MAG in one year but take a look. http://www.mag.com.au/

There used to be a small grass field / club outside of Melbourne named Berwick. Bit like Barton with sun.

Dont know if it is still active though. Hope it is.

Casey Airfield closed down over 10 years ago. Elsa had the best hamburgers this side of the black stump!

There is a really friendly flying school on Essendon Airport which used to be the International Airport until Tullamarine opened. It is called Essendon Flying School and the guy who runs it (Laurie Peppard) it very friendly.
search on Essendon Flying School and you will get all the details.

I learnt to fly at a place called Tyabb on the Mornington Peninsula about 15+ years back. Was a nice spot then, but only any good for real small stuff.

You should also try the Royal Victorian Aero Club at Moorabbin.

www.rvac.com.au

It depends a bit on where you will be living in Melbourne, its nice to be close to your club.

Tyabb has a cirrus SR20 on line, so you might be interested in getting some time on glass, not sure which school has it.

Try the following URL to get an idea of the airfield, I'd say that it would be a bit like RAF Woodvale, if that place is still open:

Jeez, Dave, but the Tigerschmitt brings back memories of Casey in the 70s ... must track Keith down for a beer when I get a day with my head above water ..

Flying Melbourne!

Another idea, Sunbury airfield, easy to get to, 20 min drive north of Melbourne International on the freeway, good sport aircraft to fly, Drifter, Gazelle, Texan or CT-2K, see more at http://www.goflying.com.au.

moorabbin flying services
moorabbin aviation services
peter bini

check out their sites on the moorabbin airport website
www.moorabbinairport.com.au

tyabb is too far out
berwick doesn't exist
tooradin is a bit too far out too

moorabbin is the place to fly from if you are based in the city centre or
southeastern suburbs.....they say it's the second busiest airport outside of bankstown in sydney (GA airport) ....

don't know about essendon (being a mile down the road from tullamarine)

(feed back on your results....have fun!)

Had a night out with Keith & Mac plus friends late last year. Will arrange another over winter, probably at Marybrooke again.

Hi, thought I'd chip in - another pom, in a similar situation (over here with work). Glider pilot when I arrived, but for a little entertainment over the forthcoming winter, I'm doing a PPL with the aforementioned Essendon Flying school.

Aircraft wise, it's a 150, 172, and they have use of a 150 aerobat. The kit's reasonably long in the tooth, but seems to work fine, Laurie's a nice bloke too - I'd recommend having a look.

Small Rodent Driver 25th April 2007 07:11

Sad to hear about Casey. I was there in 1993-ish, it had a definite aviation atmosphere.

Just received an e-mail from a pal over there who reckons there is now a TAFE (technical college?) on the site.

A sad loss for aviation.

Glasgow_Flyer 26th April 2007 16:08

Cool stuff - I'll be up for a visit as soon as I get there (and get some wheels!).

Can't wait :ok:

RVAC

Hey folks...

Thanks for all the help!

Went for the RVAC in the end and having a bit of fun down there.

Will defo check out the others at some point too (particularly Sunbury which I haven't heard much about since being out here).

Airsports Sunbury

Hi all

I wanted to complete further training for my CASA PPL, I am unaware as to if Airsports can do this qualification. I live in Sunbury and there is an Airsports at Penfield which would make travel a whole lot easier. Can anyone provide such information?

Many Thanks

Hi Deanna
Funny you should raise this thread of 10 years ago as I was just thinking about it yesterday!
In my 10 years in Melbourne, I've only been to Penfield once - as far as I know you can't do PPL training there but, if you live nearby, why not just pop in and see them.
If you are out that way, I'd suggest visiting Kyneton too :-)
Cheers.
