ATC Code
Can anybody explain what QSY means, I hear it regularly from ATC and I not sure what it means and I can not find any explaination anywhere.
|
Hi AGES,
I may be wrong, as I have been so often in the past, but I believe it has something to do with changing frequency to another ATC unit. One particular time I've heard this when I was working Birmingham Radar: Me: G-ABCD, request frequency change to Wolverhampton, 123.XX EGBB APP: QSY to Wolverhampton, Squawk 7000, G'day. Hope that helps. Everyone, please feel free to correct me |
I seem to recall it means 'change radio frequency'. I came across this when I started instructing and wondered the same thing!
|
:ok: av8 Spot on. QSY is a throw back to the "Q" codes of yesteryear and indeed means "change frequency to --" You may even hear a very old aviation person say on the RT "QSY so and so, pogo this" meaning if no contact come back to me" Some "Q"codes still going of course. Cheers.
|
Part of the W/T 'Q' codes system as per QDM, QNH, QGH etc but ATC isn't supposed to use it nowadays, so where did you hear it?
Now ask about 'pigeons' and 'strangling parrots'. |
Put "q codes " into Google and fill your boots:eek:
|
Yes, that is the old meaning of the term - changing frequency - though I believe it is no longer officially in use. Pity, because it was such a simple term, easy to use and unambiguous.
There's progress for you. |

I thought there were just a few! |
Thanks for all the information, it makes complete sense now. I have been hearing it when we are communicating at a frequency for an airway and then descending into a zone operating under a different frequencey:)
|
Hi there,
Generally speaking, "QSY" means "Freecall your next frequency." Your details won't have been passed on to the next unit. If they have, you will be instructed to "contact" the next frequency. You therefore won't have to relay all your details to the next controller you speak to. Hope that helps Foxy |

In an earlier military existence I was a signaller, Morse, hand-speed. Used QRS quite a bit, I'm afraid to say. Wretched base signallers in their warm huts, while we froze and tried to write...

While You're There
While you're looking at www.kloth.net, check out the meaning of my PPrune handle in the Q-code!

I'd better keep this away from my partner when he learns RT or he's going to be "QOD 5"...ing all over the airways. :uhoh:
Great for him but not too good for me. :hmm: |
