N Reg
Im still abit new to all this, so just a quick question.
When people talk about an "N-reg" aircraft, what actually is it they mean? I know that a G reg is one that is reg in the UK and so on, but where is N and why doesnt it follow the reg "G-xxxx"? Iv had a search through different threads but i havent found an explanation? Cheers all!!:) |
OK I'll fall for it
N is the registration letter for the USA equivalent to G for UK F for France and D for Germany etc.etc. |
Stue,
Aircraft registered in different countries have registrations that begin with a particular letter or series of letters. As you know, all aircraft registered in the UK have registrations beginning with G. The N refers to aircraft registered in the United States of America. What comes after the country part seems to differ from country to country. For example in the UK 4 letters follow after the G. In the USA, letter and numbers can follow the N (I'm not sure how many!). Aircraft registered in Ireland have registrations beginning with EI, followed by three letters (no numbers). I hope that helps! dp |
Registrations letters are internationally registered and bear a close resemblance to Radio Callsigns. The UK is allocated G and M.
We use to use M registrations for international flights in the military e.g MCRIT the Hastings from 1066 Flight! |
Cheers all.
ok, another question then? what is the problem with N reg aircraft then? some people seem to like them and others hate them? or is it just me thats understood it wrong? sorry, i know its a bit simple, but you dont learn if you dont ask! thanks! :) |
You are asking for an essay on aviation regulation, politics, and this could be pages of stuff - even if one keeps out of contentious issues.
I don't know how much you know about flying but, in a nutshell, to get worldwide IFR privileges you generally need the country of aircraft registration to match the country which issued the Instrument Rating (IR). Why? Don't even ask. Here in Europe, a pilot can get the Euro (JAA) IR, or he can go abroad and get some other IR. To fly IFR in a G-reg plane, you need the JAA IR. This involves a very long ground school and other hassle. It's designed for airline pilots. There is no special Europe-wide provision/concession for private pilots. An IR which is much more accessible for a private owner-pilot is the American (FAA) one. But this needs a US-reg (N-reg) plane. Hence you see N-reg planes based in the UK, and other countries in Europe have similar issues. There are other reasons for N-reg e.g. many planes have not been certified in Europe, so they have to be on the N register to fly at all. Politically, this is provocative to the national aviation regulators, and they are trying to stop it. But it's difficult, because international aviation treaties permit unrestricted visitation. So only long term parking can ever be controlled. There is a lot of sneering at the N-reg scene, by some Euro IR holders who regard themselves are superior, which is another thing.... UK flying schools also don't like it because they can't do the training... well actually they can do nearly all of it but it's a lot cheaper in the USA. The whole picture gets very muddy because of various ways of doing it. |
The following web-page lists aircraft registration prefixes by country, e.g. G for UK, F for France, VH for Australia, N for US, C for Canada etc - see http://www.homepages.mcb.net/bones/04fs/data/FSICAO.htm or http://www.helis.com/howflies/aviacode.php for example...
Hence, "N-reg" = US registered.
