Flying near the Solent - Lookout

Ah.. Trafalgar celebrations.
Funilly I couldn't open the link so I did a Notam search EGHH to EGHI 1st July and all I got was some radiosonde ballons and a bit of gas venting. Is the NOTAM not out yet?? On a more interesting note they are blocking lots of airspace so there must be a mighty fly by. Any details on what is included? |
The link worked fine when I checked it a minute ago. It gets you to a blank page in your web browser with a PDF file hiding underneath.
The simple answer is, (roughly) the whole of the area south of the M27 from Fareham to Hayling Island and north of the IOW becomes a restricted area up to either 4000' or 8000' depending on where exactly you are. All of it from the 22nd June to the 3rd July! There are frequencies listed that MAY gain you access to some of the restricted area for some of the time but don't bet on it. The reason of course is 'Security'. And no the notam has not been published yet - I fell into that trap too. |
You can find it if you go to the UK AIP, then to the AIC, and its under the "M" section.
By the way, what was it that alerted you to the Solent restriction? I have to say I never normally look at the AIC's. |

My house looks out over the Solent and I was planning to fly over the Fleet Review for a bit of a look. I too struggled to find the info initially but was alerted by something on the PFA website. Given the number of upset people this is going to cause, my guess is that they will delay notaming it for as long as possible (and say 'oh, but it was in the AIC months ago' when anyone complains). Sometimes it's hard to credit that we live in a democracy! With restrictions like this, the terrorists have to all intents and purposes already won. |

Whilst it is imperative for aircraft to keep clear of the ships at anchor, we will not be actively using the TRA area A or the south-east corner of area B that weekend. Therefore, I am happy for your members to transit anywhere north of a line running E/W through Lee on Solent airfield (remaining clear of the airfield due to active gliding). Microlights will then be able to cross anywhere from the west of Titchfield Haven to Cowes. Alternatively they may cross from the westerly extremity of Hayling Island direct to Bembridge thus cutting a sizeable chunk off the TRA. I know this still involves a longer sea transit than they would have liked, but it is the best that I can offer John. I hope it doesn't inconvenience your members too much and I hope that you and they have a good weekend. You will have seen from the ROF that we are using a dedicated frequency for the TRA over the period in question. I have briefed the Battle Staff controllers that you will using the above routes to and from the island so there is no requirement to call Solent Military on 118.600 MHz for entry and transit. It would be prudent for them to monitor that frequency though and essential that they call the controllers if they stray into the regulated airspace more than they have been permitted to do due to unforeseen problems.
