Another class D IMC type of question

If I want to depart Bournemouth IFR, using an IMC rating, and I want to go direct to SAM at 3000, then turn north direct to CPT, and file a flight plan:

a) Will I get a clearance to this effect before departure
b) Will I be responsible for negotiating with solent a clearance after departure, or would I be cleared to climb from Bournemouth into Solents CTA to 3000 then direct SAM, etc...

Cheers;)

You wouldn't depart IFR without a clearance. Likelihood is you'd be cleared to SAM by Bournemouth Tower, who would have negotiated that on your behalf with Solent. After take off you'd be handed to Solent from Bournemouth Tower, Solent will then try to route you according to your plan.

Bear in mind the usual problem with off airways flight plans - only the point of departure and the arrival airfield will have them. Nobody en-rte.

So, yes, Bournemouth will get you a clearance that they will negotiate with Solent before departure. They should tell them you're going to CPT next (or at least Solent should ask). After that - expect to explain your further routeing along the way.

However - expect direct CPT. Can't see you getting BIA - SAM 3000' for traffic reasons (Both Southampton and Bournemouth), so I wouldn't even plan it at that level. Higher maybe, lower definitely not.

Thanks for the advice. My plan would to be climb directly from Bournemouth airspace into the Solent airspace, and hence staying in CAS otherwise things are going to happen very quickly and it'd be better just to leave the zone and request a transit....

Of course the other way (and possibly better way depending on your point of view) is to depart IFR to the NE from Bournemouth direct CPT talking to Boscombe.:O

EA,

You can get that route if you ask.

They are keener to do the DCT CPT bit but that would take you out of CAS, last time I went to Bournemouth I asked for the route via SAM and that was given without further ado.

Nice and helpful folk both at Bournemouth and along at Solent Radar.

Thanks FD. I must admit they have always been very helpful. I'd rather stay in CAS if possible if in IMC, and as Bournemouth and Solent seem pretty integrated I thought it might work.

I'll try it and see ;)
