Chopper v Fixed wing
statistically speaking are there more jobs/positions available to chopper pilots than fixed wing?
How do you know if you are smart enough/sharp enough to be a pilot? |
nope, a lot more fixed wing aeroplanes in this world than choppers so stands to reason there's more fixed wing flying jobs. Also a huge chunk of the fixed wing fleet are two pilot operations, again so more pilots needed to fly them.
as for being smart enough/sharp enough, bah.. just keep throwing money at a school and eventually you'll get through. :ok: |
If you can multiply/divide by 3 and 5 in your head then you are "smart/sharp" enough to be a pilot. Honestly, piloting doesn't take any special brain power.
As far as fixed wing vs rotary, fixed wing is cheaper to do and you will probably find it easier to get your first job. That shouldn't be the deciding factor though, ask yourself, do I want to fly helicopters or aeroplanes? Do what you WANT to do and then deal with how you're going to do it. Don't just do what you think will be easiest. |
Can only speak for the US, but it's a very good time to have a rotary CPL right now. On the fixed wing side, regionals are hiring and looking for similar experience to that required in the late '90s. Depends what you want to do. At the top of the career ladder rotary jobs tends to be a lot more interesting, but pay a lot less too. If flying for a career was what I wanted to do I'd go rotary right now.
If you can pass the medical and can make the money to pay for your lessons you can be taught how to fly a plane, helicopters are harder. Unless you are a real muppet - actually that doesn't seem to matter either :) |
