Basic aviation websites

My friend has finally decided she ought to learn a bit about aircraft and how they fly. Probably so she can understand what I blather on about... :O

I've had a search through the 'net and found a couple of sites, but nothing that really hits the spot as far as level of complexity goes. She's a smart cookie and doesn't need baby talk.

Does anyone have any suggestions of sites they've used during their PPL training? At the moment I'm after information on lift and piston engines. Thank you!

I seem to remember there was a link to an excellent article once posted here all to do with the workings of a constant speed unit.

The author had a whole series of articles to do with a/c etc.

Perhaps someone will remember what I am trying to refer to.

Alternatively, just give her BRL's mobile number. I'm sure he'll provide her with an excellent grounding:}

When I get bored, (which is quite often now), I go to this site

Loads of links

There are literally thousands of links here, you can spent hours drifting around in them. Theres even a link to a strange bulletin board called apricot? or is it cherry?? maybe grape? no, its called prune!

(And theres links to sp**ters sites too)

AB,

Try How Stuff Works seems to be a reasonable intro to the basics of how an aeroplane flys. You should also be able to find out about piston engines (look in the auto section). I think the site also has some animated graphics.

Brooklands

PS - I got an error message each time I changed page, but it doesn't seem to stop the site working

Hi AB

Not sure if its the level you're after but a search brought up this:

www.pilotsweb.com/principle.htm

and this:

www.allstar.fiu.edu

Rich :ok:

Great stuff, thank you everyone!

Brooklands - I am going to spend hours browsing those pages. :ok: I wonder if there's anything about marine microbiology. :uhoh:

www.pilotsweb.com/principle.htm
and this:
www.allstar.fiu.edu
Just a word of warning. Both of these sites contain (different!) gross misconceptions about the way lift works.

Denker does an excellent job of explaining lift in See How it Flies, already cited by Atlas Shrugged.
