Optional extras?

I've just been looking through the list of occurance reports in the little booklet that came with the lates copy of GASIL and the one at the bottom of page 7 makes interesting reading.

Quote:

Cessna 172. The pilot booked ou on the R/T for a flight to Huddersfield (from Blackpool). 1 POB. When he taxied out, the ATC noticed that the aircraft had no engine cowls on. The pilot was questioned about his intention to fly the aircraft with no cowlings on, but he proceeded for take off and departed for Huddersfield.

I think even the great Flying Lawyer might have a problem defending that one!:O

PS anyone know if he made it to Huddersfield?

Sounds like a snatch-back to me............

I understood all aircraft are required to be able to fly without any moveable doors or windows. Whatever the sircimstances the pilot was possibly confident that the aircraft was flyable and controllable.

Flyable and controllable I'm sure. However, Cessnas rely on pressure cowls for correct cooling. Without them there would be serious risk of overheating the cylinder heads on climb out and even in the cruise! :uhoh:
