Pilot Watch Offer
As the original thread's been closed:-
I can report that I received one this morning, about 2 weeks after it was due to be sent out. Nice watch.:D Sekonda model 03511 (not featured on their website). Satin stainless case and bracelet with a locking catch to prevent the bracelet being accidentally tripped off. Large pilot style face with luminous hands and numerals. Date window and built in stopwatch with 3 dials for minutes, seconds and tenths of a second. Water resistant to 50 metres, which in watchspeak means OK for swimming but not for diving into the pool, snorkelling or scuba. Mike |
Looks like samtheman has come up trumps then.
Hopefully that'll put a stop to the sarcasm that preceded in the previous thread:yuk: |
No doubt your freebie will work 100% as well as this thing from IWC. ;)
|
Isn't it strange how people get so wound up about watches. ;)
|
Good one AB! :D :D :D ;)
|
I'll second that - you've certainly got to hand it to her! :O
|
Now we know how her mind ticks! :D
|
Mike,
you wouldn't be the Mike Cross who writes for 'Pilot' would you? |
Here we go.......

AFIK I have never written for Pilot, although I have had a letter or two published. Both Pilot and Flyer have used photos taken by me and I have drafted an article for Flyer which was published by one of the retained writers, not under my own name. I have written stuff that has been published in General Aviation. I have, regrettably, never been paid by any of the magazines for anything I have written:{ (which probably is a fair reflection of my literary skills). I did however receive a small payment for the photos used by Flyer. I'm sticking to the day job. This isn't a plug for the mag. They failed to deliver and if you look here you will see that I was not particularly complimentary to them. However someone did ask whether anyone had actually got one of these watches and if so what it was like so I have responded. Mike |
Mike
Don't let yourself get too wound up by him. If you look through all of his previous posts it's clear he's only on PPRuNe to wind people up. :hmm: :hmm: |
Still waiting for my watch over a month after renewing my subscription :suspect: .
|
Call Sam Spurdens 01799 544291 and give him a hard time. It's his job to deliver. Your experience does not appear atypical.

As I am in need of a new watch at the moment and subscribe to the aforementioned magazine anyway.......!!
Reading your description Mike, I understand it that the stopwatch second hand is one of the small dials?? This is a negative feature for me, as I'd like the stopwatch second hand to be the main 'sweep' second hand (thinking of timing hold patterns, etc). The stainless steel bracelet is a bit of a downer as well, as being a leftie (also wearing watch on left hand), I find that the heavy bracelets tend to dig in somewhat. What's the quality of the luminous finish like on the hands - do they 'luminesce' enough for use during night flying?? Sorry - bit of a cheek trying to pick holes in a 'free' watch, but trying to work out whether it's really worth having (for me)! :D |
Got mine. Nice watch big dials and numbers and glows in the dark really well.
Not sure if I will swap my rolley for it but a nice addittion to my collection. Delivered in under 2 weeks after subscribing. Generally very impressed with the service. |

More detailed description. Chunky hour and minute hands, easy to see. Dial is black hands are white. Large sweep second hand which is unaffected by the chronograph function. Luminous hands and dot markers for the hours. Stopwatch function is on the small dials. Hey if you weant an easy to read stopwatch do what I do and velcro a kitchen timer to your kneeboard.:O |
Where does the SINK go Mike? :8 :ouch:
|
Sink? You fool Chris, I've got a dishwasher!:ok:
Mock not, if it was good enough for 2D's Golden Eagle it'll do for the Luscombe. (Mind you a wind-up alarm clock would probably do just as well for the speed I fly at:cool: ) Mike |
Just got mine too! Took a week. Very nice! A little too big for my skinny wrists so I'll get the missus to pop down to the jewlers on Monday :)
The large face and big numbers are much more suitable than my Seiko chrono. However, operating the chrono dials will probably be too fiddley to bother with in flight. |
Got mine yesterday at the London Air Show (plus a free copy of Pilot!) - seems like a useful watch (bit chunky for my liking and not sure that the stopwatch is any use for in flight timing of holds - will just use my mechanical stopwatch for those).
Am having to send it off to get the bracelet adjusted, though. |
I'm with Aerbabe on this one. I use a Casio digital, nothing fancy, bought years ago from my local jewellers. Cost about £15 and loses about a second a week. The most usable feature was a double time zone - one could be permanently set to ZUZU with the other on local, wherever.
It was sad, really, at an airshow a few years ago to listen to mates drool over the Breitling stand where they were giving discounts of £25 off a £600 watch to those involved in the organisation. Still, if you've got money to burn... |
I was completely satisfied with mine until last weekend. I tried to adjust it for the one hour time change and the adjusting knob fell off! Rats :(
Who do I send it too, Pilot or Sekonda? |
Low'n' slow
The guy in charge of marketing at Pilot is Sam Spurdens - samthe man on here. I suggest you take this up with him as he was responsible for supplying the watch and can advise whether he will sort it or whether Sekonda will (can't remember whether there was a guaruntee card with the watch - if so I guess direct with Sekonda. |
Low and Slow - Sorry to hear about the watch. Please send it back to me at Pilot magazine and we will get a replacement out to you straight away.
We have an arrangement to replace any watches that are faulty straight away. Give me a call if you have any queries. Sekonda are pretty good and out of the 2500+ subs so far we've had less than 40 faults. For those PPruners I know - I passed my GFT this weekend!:ok: |
formationfoto and sam thanks for the prompt replies. I'll get the watch off as soon as I get home on 2nd December. Cheers.
