Fly a Microlight/Ultralight with a PPL(A) ?

Dont think this is possible, but ...

If I have a PPL(A), can I fly a microlight with this licence, or would I require extra training/skills test/different licence?

I have a possibility for me to "borrow" one for a few days out in Portugal, but wanted to check to see if I could fly it with my licence!?

You can fly a Microlight on a JAR-FCL PPL(A) in the UK. But check with the Portugese national authority before you fly in Portugal.

Definitely get some training first!

For UK rules you need microlight differences training signed off in your logbook, which for (say) a typical Cessna pilot to fly a medium performance 3-axis microlight is likely to take a couple of hours. But you do need that training - there are enough differences to bite if you don't understand microlights.

There's a UK microlight school in Portugal, near Lagos and run by a chap called Gerry Breen (he's got a website somewhere I'm sure). He'd be able to do that for you, but this does assume the aircraft you're borrowing is UK registered. For a Portugese registered microlight the rules might be different - but it might be worth speaking to Gerry anyhow, he's a friendly chap and presumably is fully conversant with Portugese microlight regs. (Does seaplane conversions too, which are starting to get seriously tempting in the current UK weather).

The things above are all sensible - you can fly a microlight on your PPL(A) but you would be a fool (with a good chance of becoming just another stat) if you just got in and flew.

It is a totally different experience and one that I found slightly unnerving but another aviation thing worth doing - I'm much happier SEP!

In order to be able to fly a microlight (or ultralight) in Portugal you
must have a microlight licence.
Holders of Glider and Aircraft licences (PPL included) are exempt of
written tests, but must do a flight examination after having attended
a practical flight instruction program accredited with the INAC
(the Portuguese CAA).

If you are able to read Portuguese, the relevant regulations are:

Decreto-Lei nº 71/90 de 2 de Março
art. 7 and art. 8. (available on the Diario da Republica)

Portaria 332/90 de 2 Maio Art.14 and Art.16.

If you have a "foreign" licence, your best bet would be checking with

I'm on the process of getting my Ultralight licence, and will have
my written exams next Thursday and Friday.
