Definition of Very Light Aircraft

The aircraft that crashed in Northern (see post about HE- registration) is a Sky Arrow. I was told from an expert that if belongs to the category of very light aircraft.

Does anyone have the definition or a link to follow.

Do you have any stories or comment about this aircraft?

Sky Arrow

It's a nice plane to fly. Available as VLA or Group A (FAR23)

Two seat tandem high wing pusher, normally fitted with a Rotax 100 hp

The definition from JAR-VLA is:

Quote:

...an aeroplane with a single engine (spark- or compression-ignition) having not more than two seats, with a Maximum Certificated Take-off Weight of not more than 750 kg and a stalling speed in the landing configuration of not more than 45 knots (CAS).
.....
JAR-VLA is not applicable to such aeroplanes classified as ultralights or microlights.

That last line however being incorrect, JAR-VLA gets used quite often for higher performance microlights where a dedicated microlight code is deemed inappropriate. It's just that they are then still called microlights / ultralights / ULM / etc.

The early part of that definition is what defines a VLA, rather than necessarily that JAR-VLA was used in it's certification.
