Shortest Runway in the UK
Not sure if this should be in the "Questions" forum or here in "Private Flying" but here goes:
Does anyone know which airfield has the shortest runway in the UK (or the world)? There was an earlier thread about the longest rwy but I am curious about the shortest. Many thanks R |
Possibly Hairyplane's garden (see thread "Of course I can land in your garden") :D
|
Disregarding nominal runways that are only designed for helicopter use, the shortest I've ever landed on was 28a/10a at Weston Zoyland, which is 244m.

Shortest runway
Definately my garden!

04/22 Grass at Gloucestershire Airport measures 300 x18m...it's currently rough as old boots but very soon to be ploughed, graded, reseeded and ultimately licensed...that might well make it the shortest Licensed UK runway.
....also making it a suitable venue for a PPrune summer fly in?? |
Runways at my home strip Eastbach are quite short, the shortest RW21, which to be fair, only a few of us use, paces out at about 120 yds... but it rises about 100ft! You fly up the valley, hit a right, slip over the trees then flare hard with power up the bank.
Kingy (god my spelling!) |
Thank you all for your replies

Out Skerries in Shetland is 380 m. No undershoot area available or possible.
Daytime it's used for normal commercial services & is available 24hr for air ambulance evacuations. Last year they even got electric lighting installed! Beats the hell out of goosenecks. |
I think the shortest licensed runway in England is 18 / 36 at Netherthorpe EGNF. A quick check of my flight guide (see AIP for definitive info) gives r/w 18 landing distance available (LDA) of 357 metres and r/w 36 LDA of 309 metres, and r/w 36 is downhill. TORA in both cases is 382 metres.
"Main" runway at EGNF is 06 / 24 with LDAs of 407 / 370 metres. |
I've landed on 18 - C175 in a 25 knot headwind. didn't even use half of it, but it was rough going in over the trees on short final!
|
Can confirm what QNH1013 says.....here at Netherthorpe we do have the shortest licensed runway and it is used for training regularly.
I still can't get out of the habit of doing a short field approach and landing at every place I fly to... gets a bit embarrassing plonking it down on the numbers and then having to taxi two miles down the tarmac to the next exit!:O |
camaro know the feeling, plonked down on Cranfield at the PFA rally last year. Smack on the numbers. Mmmm, tail up and fast taxi 1/2 a mile to get to the turnoff. Should have used the grass
Tinny you have all the fun! My memories of Shetland are limited to the Jubilee 77 and the Brae Hotel. Oh and the BP yacht club and other bits I'm not going to talk about :) |
