Zopiclone and PPL training…and maybe career
Hello
I am trying to find out if taking a one off dose of Zopiclone for sleep related issues is ok whilst training? The CAA website says that it is “disqualifying for medical certification”. What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that if someone has ever taken it they won’t get a medical? Or is there a time limit? thanks |
Take it once and you'll be required to state that on your medical application form.

Speak to an AME, not an internet forum.
As above you may have declare it for life and be prevented from flying until a certain period without use has passed. You need your wits about you when learning to fly so any sedative drug is not a good idea. |
From the CAA website:
All other hypnotics, including Zolpidem, Zopiclone and “over the counter” preparations such as Diphenhydramine and Promethazine are disqualifying for medical certification. Sadly since the GermanWings crash the whole industry is paranoid about allowing another occurrence. It doesn't mean you'll never get a medical, but don't expect an easy ride. |

As already stated you must discuss your personal health, in confidence, with an AME. No other opinion is worth a jot. Best wishes, I hope for good news and that you will be flying soon.
