Instrument Foreign Pilot Exam syllabus - US FAA

I'm in the process of turning my New Zealand CPL + IR into a US PPL and IR via the 61.75 process. To do that, I need to pass the Instrument Foreign Pilot exam.

I have searched around and had no luck finding any study guides, syllabus etc to help me prepare for this.

Has anyone else done this exam and would be willing to share what to expect and how you studied for it?

I'm not aware of a specific Instrument Foreign Pilot exam. I think you might need to pass the regular Instrument Pilot Airplane exam. You can find sample questions here. Any of the standard Instrument prep courses from King, Sportys, Gleim, ASA, etc. will work. See the FAA requirements here.

There is indeed an Instrument Foreign Pilot (IFP) test. The knowledge base is the same as the Instrument Rating Airplane test but there are only 50 rather than 60 questions.

You may find these helpful:

I did it quite a few years ago. I bough the Gleim IF book and studied from that, made an appointment to sit the exam at a US flight school. The exam was online and the results are immediate. Nothing too difficult about the exam though they focus on some different areas to the New Zealand syllabus.

The ASA Prepware app (for iOS) will give you the option of studying for 'Instrument for Foreign Pilots'. Although the database is not as comprehensive as Gleim or Sheppard, it is good enough for a pass.

While you won't be able to learn the questions, the content accurately covers the type of questions included. So for someone already with the required knowledge level, the test should be trivial.

If you prefer paper, I'll second the recommendation for Gleim, although I’ve also used the ASA in the past it wasn't as current or detailed. Sheppard is undoubtedly tops, if you just want the question bank.

Good luck.
