Flying on Monday

Finally got hold of the photos taken by P1, you might appreciate the best of them. Flight to almost 9,000' and back down was about 50 minutes long including the aerotow.

Looks great, never seen a variometer showing “knots” in a direction before though?

90-100 feet per minute seems more like something that makes sense.

It's knots in gliders, or (I believe) m/sec on the continent. Good wave lift is powerful and very smooth - it's not uncommon in good conditions to see the needle on the stop. At 100 fpm it would have taken 80 minutes to climb 8,000', as it was the entire flight including aerotow & descent was about 50 minutes.

Of course what goes up must come down - the sink on the downwind edge of the wave bar is just as strong,

Big Pistons Forever 10th Jul 2020 17:09

1 Knot up or down = 101 ft per minute. In the picture the glider is climbing at 900 ft min. Best I have ever had was 19 knots up :ok: ....... followed by 12 kts down :uhoh:

My club just started flying again but the weather has been unseasonable cold and wet on the West Coast of Canada. I am planning to fly this Monday but I very much doubt I will see conditions like Cat's Five.

Saab Dastard 10th Jul 2020 18:23

Great pics - I'm envious! I've had some great wave flights in the peak district, but I've not flown for a few years.

Is that the Tay estuary in the last photo, by any chance?

We don't see conditions like those every day by any means!

I've no idea what the best up was, but I did see the needle on the stop a couple of times. Hopefully I'll extract the trace from the FLARM tomorrow. I did use the sink of the next wave bar upwind to help get down.

Well spotted, it is. On the same day the club guru flew s 500km task twice, in a 15m unflapped glider.

Quite an array of instruments. Just missing a rev counter...

Hat, coat.

I think he has a pee tube!

I note that there is a perspex screen inserted between front and rear pilots - an anti-virus measure. I believe that they make interpilot communication difficult.

It does, we had to shout at each other. Not much communication was needed though

Big Pistons Forever 11th Jul 2020 17:20

We looked at a plastic divider for our clubs 2 seater but decided to just go with mandatory mask wearing by both occupants and a cockpit sanitize between flights.

India Four Two 12th Jul 2020 02:33

As BPF said, mask and sanitize in my club.

Nice pictures. What glider? ASK 21?

Thanks, P1 took the pictures, that's the back of my head in one of them. My hat is black not grey!

Yes, ASK 21.

Thanks longer ron , more great pics and looks like the Tay estuary again. And look at the asi in mine, flying nice & slowly!

I should add that not having to fly & take photos was a help.

Hi Cats Five
From the flight log - I took off just over an hour before you and landed 5 mins behind you,you guys must have done it the easy/skillful way almost straight from A/T :)
I made hard work of it LOL,through lack of skill on my part I ended up stuck on/near Bishop for 1 hour just above the ridge,I was obviously waiting for something better to come along - eventually managed to get a semi decent thermal to get across to W Lomond and then transition to wave.Actually looking at my barogram I must have been in at least 8kt up for a while - I must have been enjoying the view too much to really take in the vario reading.
I also was climbing in a straight line @ 46kt at one stage with a little + Flap selected but usually flying a little faster than that :)

cheers LR

We didn't go on the hill at all, pulled of a little below 3,000 AAL a bit north of it. The trace shows climb all the way from there. I think the trick was pulling off at the right point. :) Apart from the first 500' or so of the tow I did all the flying. P1 commented he hadn't been in wave for a long time!

longer ron 14th Jul 2020 12:55

HaHa - I did not plan to use the hill - I pulled off at 2k and then lost height and had to go to the hill to remain airborne :).
I should have paid another tenner and gone up to 3k.
I have not done too much wave flying so it is always a real pleasure to find some.
