Essex Radar/Director - great
 
I regularly transit both Luton and Stansted zones and am lucky enough to always get a crossing.

Today I made a crossing request and I really made a pig’s ear of the radio. As they were busy, I was given an unexpected request to go via a waypoint which took me a while to factor in to my route. Despite both of these challenges, Essex Radar and Director both worked to enable my request without any fuss or hassle.

I talk to them both professionally and privately - Amanda is just the best ever in my 25 professional years of operating from STN. :ok:

Amanda is a great mate of mine and regularly reduces me to fits of giggles when she’s “controlling” me. They’re all good there and I’m lucky in my job to get to meet them when we’ve put our headsets away. If most low hour PPL’s and students were introduced to the STN/LTN crowd early in their flying careers they’d realise there’s no need to be afraid of flying in Class D, and that transits are part of the challenge and fun of GA. On a grotty night into either airport I’m always glad to gear their voices.

I am inferring from your comment, that you took some time reprogramming your navigational device. If I was presented with a request to fly to an unexpected waypoint, I would tell the controller that I'm unfamiliar with the waypoint and request vectors.

Or in airspace that busy plan for the unexpected, get all the VRP’s into your plan, and study the routes between them, and mark the tracks/distances on your chart. You’re unlikely to be given vectors. If you’re unsure then you will most likely be told to route round. The aerial photography feature in SkyDemon is also handy for a pre-look at what a VRP really looks like and assists familiarity. Kimpton Hall in the Luton zone anyone?

We all fluff our lines sometimes, trust me. I’m so pleased it worked out so well. I appreciate a change in routing isn’t ideal but every day is different on essex. We will always help if we can.
