Weather Info
Quite simply - where does everyone get their WX info?
I end up using a good few different websites/apps to find different bits of info I require for a flight. Is there a one stop shop website or app aimed at pilots that'll give you surface wind, cloud base, fronts moving in etc? Cheers! RT |
I look at the UK Aviation Met charts and Metar/TAFs for the region. Also the Metoffice app free, no login. It has predicted shower activity. Blitzortung for lightning if relevant. And finally as I fly, out of the window.
For farther ahead, I use Meteostar. |
Um. Met office aviation briefing 214, 215, TAFs & METARs? |

Rather than create a new thread I thought I'd ask for an additional weather info source if people have it; I've spent the last three days myself searching extensively and reading a few threads on here about this and I'm still struggling to find what I'm after. Basically I'm after a map like that on Skyvector with the different coloured dots, but for at least 24 hrs in advance. Reason being is I am trying to plan for a scenario where I have a microlight booked for a whole day to fly say, 160 miles, but want to make absolutely sure that enroute both in and out I have VMC the whole way. Anything less than 24 hrs I can't cancel a full day booking and I lose a stack of cash. Ogimet aero seems great as it goes beyond 24 hrs but it is one dimensional, I want a 2d map. All the weather forecast software I've seen so far doesn't give things like cloud base and it would be way easier if there was a utility out there that converted forecasts and TAFs into VFR, MVFR, IFR etc (perhaps with changeable parameters for what the pilot classes as VFR like in SkyDemon). Any advice greatly appreciated - or alternative suggestions. Many thanks |
Use the windy link I posted above - that'll do everything you want.
Frankly I'd ignore the legal definition of VFR - virtually no microlight wants to be flown cross country down to VFR minima anyhow. Think harder about what your personal minima are, which will be greater. G |
Thanks Genghis, much appreciated. Windy looks incredible. Although I noticed the dots actually don't change colour as time is changed but the vis/cloud base layer is way more detailed and useful anyway so I'll use that. Thanks |
For general wether predictions I have not found another weather app that even starts to compare with https://www.ventusky.com
It is dead simple yet totally comprehensive and the graphics are brilliant. Cannot recommend it enough. |
What has happened to GRAMET. I use that a lot and it still works on my phone but I have just wiped and restored my iPad mini and now GRAMET is no longer available. Any ideas why? |
