I would say that far from buggering up your lesson, the Dornier Pilot actually provided a very valuable lesson in that other aircraft don't always do what you would expect in the circuit. So buy that pilot a Tusker baridi (cold beer) if you ever meet him!

+1 Exactly what I was thinking (Well, maybe not the Tusker part...……….) MIs-communication, radio snafu, inadvertent "wrong turns," or blatant disregard, all can happen anywhere.

In my non-aviation world there is a concept of the 'radio-assisted collision'. There are plenty of spectacular examples in which protracted discussions over VHF have introduced total confusion and ended in disaster, sometimes because the boat you are actually talking to is not the boat you think you are talking to!

Essentially the message is that you apply the fundamental rules of engagement rather than trying to improvise over the VHF and potentially introducing confusion. I don't know if or how this translates to aviation - but I can imagine it might.

I would suggest the Dornier pilot was an asshole and the instructor wasn't much better.
Valuable lesson? My ass. The instructor should decide what lessons. Yes radio assisted collisions are possible, and in 3 dimensions unlike on the water.
Buy him a beer? I'd be tempted to smack him in the mouth if I met him!
Airmanship at the lowest level.

Precisely that , Sam .
