"You can always go around"

Excellent song advice, accompanied by some breath-taking shots of how strong modern airliners are:

Including the A320 Mulhouse accident spoiled it for me I'm afraid.

Not
if you are in a glider! You have to get it right first time.:ok:

Just to be awkward, I have gone around in a glider - trying to land on a ridge site (the Long Mynd) in lift so strong that we were doing bungee (elastic band) launches.

I doubt that I'm the only one who's done it in the same conditions (but it was only the once in 3000 or so landings!) :)

Haraka,

I agree. That last clip was not appropriate. One of the many Kai Tak videos would have been more suitable.

From my mathematical training I don't like using the word "always" unless it is provable that there are exactly no exceptions. In using an exception as an illustration he made the point very clearly - you can't always go around. The standard instructor's mantra should be understood for what it is - almost always good advice, but only almost; an example of lies-to-children.

Shame about the last clip but otherwise good video…

Just finished reading an old civil C-130 crash where the FO fluffed the landing, Captain took control and attempted a go around, two engines on one side failed to accelerate due oil contamination in compressors, lost control, crashed. An immediate abort would have saved the day. Some days the dog of fate lifts its leg and pees on the leg of science.
