Portable ADS-B hardware/software
 

I'd really like to get some ADS-B In/Out ability but so far all the iPad software I've found is purely for the continental US.

Can anyone advise of any software that will work worldwide, regardless of the hardware requirement?

try pilot aware, i have it fitted it to my trig21 mode S transponder using an ipad with skydemon and it works a treat,
many more aircraft now become visible when you know what part of the sky to look at above or below your altitude,

Google 'SkyEcho'.

Very interesting piece of portable kit, and the website says they are trialling it to show real time weather etc on tablets running software such as SkyDemon.

Whatever software I use, it needs to be compatible with portable hardware.

The hardware I was looking at is:


Stratus 1S or Stratus 2S

GDL 39 or GDL 39 3D

Dual XGPS 170 or 190, iLevil

PowerFLARM portable picks up ADS-B transmitters wonderfully, but only transmits a FLARM signal ie no ADS-B out.

To my knowledge only the UK allows portable ADS-B OUT during the current trial period, everywhere else sending position information is restricted to fixed mount equipment. So, my current status - there ain't no solution for iPad.

Sorry, to further clarify, my aircraft already has ADS-B out, I'm primarily interested in ADS-B In.

Did you look for Uavionix already? I used their pingbuddy stick and am keen on the new https://flywithscout.com .

You definitely need PilotAware then.
ADSB in, ModeC, ModeS, every other PilotAware (1300 now) and also Flarm via the OGN.

less than £200 too !

@kghjfg: Did pilotaware finally implement the automatic switch off of P3i for countries where illegal?

That's a good point, I presumed UK/Easa land. I misread the OP's complaint that he could only find US solutions. You can't fly a PAW in America.

But will 'scout' work in the UK?...I don't think it will.
I am in the same position as the OP and have ADSB 'out' and just want ADSB 'in'. I was very interested in pingBuddy2 which was supposedly going to be introduced in the uk in March 2017 but uAvionix now have gone all quiet on it.

Pilotaware is just too much of a jumble for me at the moment, hopefully things will progress and improve in time.

ADS-B in is available in one compact unit- PowerFLARM portable. Alternatively, PowerFLARM core can be fitted behind a compact screen on the panel. And it picks up Mode A/C/S transponders and the thousands of gliders in Europe transmitting FLARM as well.
In the long run, I think that affordable ADS-B in/out is the best solution but PowerFLARM, despite not being cheap, was definitely the best game in town a couple of years ago when I got it, and probably still is. This is because it was/is designed as a collision avoidance aid and gives an audible warning of collision threats, as well as the less useful virtual radar display of other devices.

PS I have no commercial connection to FLARM or PowerFLARM.

PowerFlarm does have two thingies.
First, it is proprietary stuff and I like open architectures.
Second, if you don't pay for the annual update, it switches itself off and that is quite unpleasant if in flight.

I agree entirely with your first point. I wish FLARM/PowerFLARM was open source and everyone could use it more cheaply.

On your second point, however, you get lots, really lots, of warning that the software will need to be updated. And, for PowerFLARM at least, and you can download it for free onto a mini SD card for about a month before the deadline.
