NPPL & EASA Aeroplanes
 
Question:

I am currently flying my Falke (an EASA aeroplane) on my NPPL SLMG.

A quick look at an article in the latest LAA magazine suggests that after April 2018 it appears that people with NPPL will not be able to fly EASA aeroplanes - am I reading that right ?? or are SLMG's exempt ??

Just it seems that most people I know who are flying SLMG's (virtually all of which are EASA aeroplanes by definition) are on an NPPL..............so would all be affected.

Can anyone clarify this point ??

I am led to believe that you are correct, though things may change in the interim.
My aircraft is non EASA and I "think" I'll be safe and as such I have the feeling I won't need to go down the LAPL route at all.
The whole pile of shyte is too confusing for words, no one seems to know the truth, even the legislators can't agree on the colour of the shyte!

You've got it about right, Arc, but I wouldn't worry too much,
because,
conversion to LAPL(A)TMG or even LAPL(S)TMG is fairly painless*.

Its in CAP804 Section 4 Part P page 13 or 15.

You may even prefer these EASA licences; get your head around the rolling recency concept and you need never go near an examiner ever again.

*apart from handing over cash just to keep doing what you are doing at the moment.

I think I'll worry about it in a years time :hmm: especially if it changes or gets delayed again..............

Just seems crazy that I'll then have to get an LAPL and an LAPL medical to keep flying the same aeroplane, from the same seat, over the same places as I am currently on my NPPL with a self cert medical !! - just because the aeroplane is on some EASA list !!

The self-declaration seems to be a great idea and good on the CAA for introducing it but it is such a shame that it only affects CAA regulated aircraft in the long run.

I cant say I agree it could all change and we will be able to carry on flying EASA aircraft on a declaration. I wish we could as it would save me a fortune.

Before I go mad and apply for my SPL I've seen some posts here on PPrune that suggests this may now be extended to April 2019.

Does anyone have any confirmation of this ?? - I can't find anything official on this just the PPrune Scuttlebutt...........

Right now, the deadline that requires SPL or LAPL(S) for EASA sailplanes (including TMGs) is unchanged at Apr 2018.

Thus, nothing published,
however,
I think you can confidently expect a further extension to 2020/21.

Note, this is for flying TMGs on a sailplane licence.
I'm not aware of any extension in prospect for flying them on PPL(A) or LAPL(A).
