Perth (EGPT) Thanks
 

Last weekend while helping out with the UK Junior Gliding event at Portmoak, I had need to divert to Perth.
Portmaok had clagged in with 300' cloudbase and I had one of the "Juniors" flying in the back of the glider so it seemed sensible to find somewhere close by to land out.
We were at 6500' when Portmoak became unusable so Perth was an easy glide in.

Having never previously landed a glider at a non gliding establishment I was a little wary about pitching up unannounced but was on a genuine weather divert.

The guys at Perth could not possibly have been more welcoming, Pete in the Tower gave clear instruction as to what runway was in use, helped out with likely suitable parking and made me aware of traffic in circuit.

Once off the runway a guy came out from the tower to assist and helped with ensuring the glider was not in anyone's way.

The following day when I arrived with a Robin to tow out, we were allowed sole use of 27 whilst we footered around to get away, we were loaned a truck to tow the glider, a couple of guys from the flying school came out and helped us tow off.

I'm hugely impressed by how nice and welcoming everyone was, I'm very grateful for all the assistance and time / patience extended towards us.

Nice to see a genuine post giving deserved praise for going out of the norm and giving a good service rather than the IMHO sycophantic ones praising, people just doing their day job as we all do/did, as an example, a well known Hampshire airfield, giving a LARS with "ooh I got a Basic service, a squawk, and a QNH" well done, yaddah yaddah, I couldn't have got to Sandown without your help..:ugh:

I never see anyone praising their milkman, or the train/bus drivers etc etc on here for just doing their job...

During my training, at a well known NE Scotland airport, my instructor told me not to worry about declaring an emergency if I thought I was in trouble. He reckoned that the guys in the fire station at said well known airport would be fighting to get on the fire truck if an emergency was declared. I have never needed it but it is a good piece of advice IMHO.

Back on topic and my view of the guys at Perth is that they are just as enthusiastic about helping out but, in their case, it is because they are all enthusiasts. My experience of Perth is nothing but good. I was in the tower with Pete and my instructor one day whilst a fellow student was doing solo circuits. He got into a bit of difficulty on a go around which resulted in the crash alarm being activated from the tower. The response from the emergency team would have done justice to a full time fire service at Heathrow in terms for speed of response. Perth is a great destination, three runways (two tarmac and one grass), fuel, Scottish Aero Club, a cafe and a laid back but professional attitude.

PS. My fellow student recovered from his difficulty and may a perfect landing the next time. Phew! Crash team stand down.

Delighted but not surprised by the reception reported at Perth airfield. Although no longer a member of the Scottish Aero Club, I still visit Scone from time to time and find the reception very friendly.
I am also pleased to report that the only time that I have had to divert into Portmoak because of weather a few years back, the reception was friendly and helpful.

Can I just say that my postman is great.

2 grass, don't forget 18 if you're a big feartee oh the x-winds like me !! And yes Pete does run things well.

Airwave it's nice to see your post of appreciation. Our pastime is better because we all pitch in for each other when there's a problem. Many times I've been helped, and many times I have helped, it just gets better for all of us that way.

I'm based about 20mins from Perth.
An excellent destination, friendly, helpful, very active with club events.

I was having a bimble in the SuperCub when I heard you inbound, I figured you'd be happy to know about the giant hole in the cloud right above the airfield and after reporting that to you I just kept out of your way until you were established in the circuit.... You sounded pretty happy with things otherwise I'd have offered to guide you into the field if needed.

As already stated above, Perth is by far one of the friendliest fields you'll find and Pete does an excellent job in the tower... :ok:

Happy memories at Perth from my few visits there, best one was when I was still a student practicing for my test, instructor burst out laughing when we realised all three runways were active! All worked out though, and safely.

Always felt welcome, nice little airfield.

Did my flight test there 7 years ago with Sandy Torrance, great guy, no sadly departed and very sadly missed.

The immediate threat would be proposals to build from next year onwards. Part of that development would be under climb out from 21 and right under finals for 03 at 500' or less.

Bet an off ramp into the airfield from the new road is in the planning and it ain't going to be for Jim and Pete's convenience. Spam Valley redux i'm afraid.
