Heathrow Third Runway

I see the Government is minded to support the new 3rd runway.

Is there any information as to how the existing Heathrow CAS is likely to be affected?

PA28181 25th Oct 2016 14:30

If your age is correct and you fly from EGTF, then you'll not have a lot to be concerned about as you will be over 90 before that runway is operational:rolleyes:

MrAverage 25th Oct 2016 15:55

Third runway already exists. It just needs minor improvements to the nearby roads, a proper access road and an on airport station (two simple route options). That and non stop (or limited stop) services from St Pancras/Stratford and Manston does it.

m.Berger 25th Oct 2016 16:31

HS2 works out at an estimated £1998.32 per inch.
St Pancras to Manston = 81.2 miles (at this price, .2 is significant,) or
£8,632,672,983
That is the railway taken care of then.

Nobody seems able to explain to me why an airport in a big big field with nothing around it, (save for Andrewsfield,) connected to a motorway 20 minutes from the M25, could not be chosen instead.

PDR1 25th Oct 2016 17:15

Perhaps because it's in a big field with nothing around it, so it's bleedin' miles from EVERYWHERE.

And in most typical M11 traffic conditions it takes an hour from Stansted to the M25, followed by at least another two hours to get from there to anywhere useful. It's nearly an hour by train from Stansted to even the WRONG bits of London, never mind anywhere else.

Need I go on?

I wouldn't have thought it's going to make any difference to the south (Fairoaks) nor probably to the north (Denham) Both have ATZs partly within the existing CTR and would I imagine enjoy the same historic access. I don't understand why the CTR is as big as it is - it's not as if traffic join downwind under the TMA any more. The old justification for its North/South extent was to accommodate ops on 05/23 which went many years ago - 15/33 went decades ago to accommodate Terminal 3 expansion.

That's what I thought. Depressed enough already making 61

m.Berger 25th Oct 2016 19:13

I have never taken an hour to get from Stansted to the M25 and I have done the journey often enough having lived in Essex and worked in London.
The view from Farnham may be different, but when I was working at Gatwick three weeks ago I found it to be completely isolated from anywhere and some considerable distance from London, despite being connected to a motorway.
I would wager that Gatwick to London City by road would take longer than the same destination originating from Stansted.
Hmm. 38 minutes for the 32 miles versus 57 for the 54 miles having looked it up.

It's nearly an hour by train from Stansted to even the WRONG bits of London, never mind anywhere else.
Stansted is, however, a really rather good local airport for Cambridge - half an hour down the road or rail, but far enough that we don't get the noise.

horizon flyer 25th Oct 2016 21:47

Direct rail links between the airports with free travel if holding an airline ticket with inter airport luggage transfer then maximise the runway use in each airport, to bloody obvious for a politician.

Genghis the Engineer 26th Oct 2016 07:06

This pretty much explains why...https://theconversation.com/why-heat...n-report-44149

The controlled airspace grab is all about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the noise nuisance at any one locality and will get worse from GA's perspective also - whether there's a third runway or not.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions like noise is about getting aircraft higher faster and bringing them back to earth steeper, this the airlines like as it cuts costs but you need vacant runway space.

Get the runway avalability and you can cut down on the controlled airspace required for the very inefficient practice of holding.

The railway already exists and, as I said, a choice of two routes. The Gatwick Express uses existing track and did not cost £2000 per inch.

SouthendPilot 26th Oct 2016 09:27

I live right next to Stansted and commute in to London regularly, you can be in Liverpool St in about 45 minutes on the train, which is quicker than trying to get from Heathrow to The City on the tube! Driving, even at 8am it takes 15-20 mins to get to the M25. Its surrounded by fields and sparsely populated, compared to Heathrow.

Anybody tried driving from Heathrow to City Road recently?? At any time of the day it can take 2 hours through West London. Its a nightmare.

And then, we have Manston.... a whacking great runway, ready to go, again, surrounded by fields and room to expand.

For anybody stood outside looking in on this situation it just seems utterly bonkers.

The Ancient Geek 26th Oct 2016 10:08

One big problem - LHR is our NATIONAL airport, it happens to be close to London.
Manston is in the worst possible place for almost all of the nation in the bottom right hand corner
The best place for a Heathrow replacement would be north and west of the current site, somewhere near BHX with an HS2 station would be good. Accessible from the M5, M40 and HS2 and the journey time by HS2 to central london would be faster than the current tube line from LHR.

Time to revive the London Oxford proposal (not Kidlington, the one southwest of Abingdon with railway to the south and A34 to the east)?

Third runway to be built on ramp over M25

Does anyone understand the proposal for the new runway being a ramp over the M25? As I understand it the westerly end of the runway will be 8 metres above the general level of the airport. Is it that the runway will only be used for westerly takeoffs and easterly landings or will there be some much shorter and steeper taxiways to get planes on and off the westerly end?

Johnm 27th Oct 2016 09:21

Upper Hayford is intact and could easily be connected to road and rail connections to both Birmingham and London. A third runway at Heathrow is simply bonkers.
