Class 2 ppl hearing standards?
Hi,
Can anyone tell me what's involved with the ppl medical examination with regards to hearing? Many years ago I did hold a class one medical, in the hope of going commercial but alas it never came to fruition. Regards Dave |
Class 2
(a) Hearing (1) The applicant should understand correctly conversational speech when tested with each ear at a distance of 2 metres from and with the applicant’s back turned towards the AME. May be achieved with hearing aids. Full standard is at: Otorhinolaryngology guidance material GM | UK Civil Aviation Authority |
I had my initial class 2 last week, and for the hearing part the AME stood a couple of metres behind me and continued talking while getting me to cover each ear in turn and repeat what he had said.

What did you say?

When I did mine (probably just less than a year ago) the medical examiner just told me to face the other way. He then asked me to cover each ear in turn and repeat some numbers he read out.
It was certainly not a test of 'good hearing' but to confirm you were hearing what he said and not guessing or lipreading. It was really basic. If you fail then you would probably have to be referred to get hearing aids or similar. |
I don't remember a separate hearing bit, but I wonder if it was when the AME asked me some questions during the ECG from the other side of the room ?
