Any help appreciated.

Apart from rubber necking, I had heard that there were enhanced scanning techniques that helped. A particular way of rubber necking.

By scanning I assume you mean a lookout scan? The technique is to move the eyes around the horizon in a series of short steps, stopping for a short period at each segment as the eye picks up relative movement better when the background is stationary - if you see what I mean. The geometry of the scan will depend on whether your aircraft is high or low winged etc. but basically don't forget to lookout above and below as well.

Thanks.
I do rubberneck but was under the impression that there was an effective method.
I noticed on your profile that you are are possibly a military instructor(?).

Could you mail me any more details?

Lookout, Attitude, Instruments!

Look as far left as you can scanning up and down; when you get to straight ahead check you pitch and roll attitude a brief instrument check 3-4 seconds adjust if necessary then contiunue the scan to the right.

Keep repeating it.
