Importing engine bits from the US - Customs charge?
 

Does anyone have any advise on the cheapest way to import some second hand engine bits without being charged unfairly by Customs?

I've sourced a second hand crankshaft, prop hub and connecting rods for my VW engine. The parts were purchased in the 90's by the seller but never used. They've been properly stored and are pristine. The price is very good but I'm worried it may have a big customs and VAT charge added on entry. I've had that before and it was higher than the item I'd purchased! :ooh:

Anyone know the best way for him to label it to reduce my charges? Or is there another way? I'm not talking big money (788 USD), but I'm on a budget I don't want to bust it!

There is no "unfair" charge. You are importing goods into the EU (still, as of 1247z today), so you will be charged tax VAT 20% on (goods value + shipping) at least.

If they accept it being declared as aircraft parts, no customs charge (but I doubt for such parts). If they treat it as car parts, import duty rate of car parts would be additional 4.5% and maybe also a merchandise processing fee.

Always a bit risky asking how to get around (okay, break) the law on a public forum!

What about traceability of the parts?

Is that still with regard to avoiding (okay, evading) customs charges - or is it to warn the OP to check that his parts will be legal?

For the first, no change. For the second, hopefully he's already checked this.
