Logbook Repairs (UK)
 

Hi Guys.

So.... Again... I have sent my logbook to the CAA, and after NOT losing it, it finally meandered its way back to me after 4 weeks after despatch (or so they say - made me glad that I had photocopied my entire logbook just before sending it!). But it has come back a bit destroyed, the backing has almost completely come off, the hard cover corners are all damaged (from what I assume may have been humidity). Thankfully the important stuff is still in pretty good condition!

I was wondering if any of you have gone through the trouble of getting your logbooks mended professionally? And if so - if anyone has contact details of a company that they have used and did a really good job?

I have gone through quite a few book binders around the London area but none of them have been particularly helpful, and most said that they were unable to help after sending them the pictures of the cover leaving the main part of the logbook. I feel that they could not be bothered... I do have a new logbook of the same kind still in its wrapping, so that the cover could be used if required.

I have been told that I can stop using the logbook and use a new one from that point forward, but really i love my logbook, and really want one single logbook with all the information in it. Ideally i'd like someone who can mend my logbook / replace the covers and re-attach all the pages to the new cover.

Can any of you recommend someone?

It's amazing what you can do with duct tape.
Or if you want something smarter, you could take classes in bookbinding.

There was an extensive thread on this subject several years ago so a bit of work on the search function should show it up.
It may well have been on the Military forum but I can't be sure.
Even then it was hard to find anyone to do bespoke book binding and very costly.

Although, frankly, if you've only got a few hundred hours, just copy it up into a new logbook.

Genghis, that's a bit harsh!

Not intended as such - just that in terms of time and effort for the result, an evening or two copying up into a new logbook might be the best value option.

Clearly north of 500 or so, the bookbinding option starts to make more sense.

I used to have a colleague with approaching 9000hrs of military flying. He'd had three navy logbooks bound together in leather with wings embossed on the front. It was a thing of beauty, and certainly illustrated that these things can be done. Putting the pages into the cover of the new logbook, or getting the whole lot bound in leather doesn't *sound* a problem, surely?

Probably the quickest way for a bookbinder to repair your log book is to get a new one and
use that cover for your old one.

Much easier than trying to repair the outside of yours. Probably just a ten minute job for an expert.

Phone around the nearest universities to you (loads in London) and track down whoever does the students' dissertations. Student unions might know.

When I was a student, a student 'friend' of mine was learning bookbinding as a course option.
I was asked if I had a book that could be re-bound.
As a result I have a treasured, leather-bound copy of Winged Victory by Victor Yeates (Readers' Club edition).
FREE!.
There are plenty of Google-able bookbinding courses and every student must be looking for a worthy subject to motivate them.
Of course, being students, they may glue all the pages together while they're at it.

I had a book rebound by R G Scales years ago and was very happy with the price and the workmanship.

I'd recommend calling in to show them what you need, rather then emailing.
Near Borough tube station - or not far from London Bridge if that's more convenient for you.

PiperClassic - haha - nice one! The engineer's flow diagram! Love it. As mentioned though I really want a proper fix.

Wageslave - thank you very much for the link. I appreciate it. I did look at that thread but it looked more than 3 years old and I wasn't sure that this was still current. There were also quite a few mixed reviews of "the elusive mr bond".

GTE - I had considered that. But my logbook has instructor stamps, signatures, certification of hours, stickers (from new zealand), differences training signed off... amongst the hours that I have racked up. So copying them over is not an option for me I am afraid.
