South Africa General Aviation - into the sunset?!
I'd welcome opinions regarding the 'health' of the general aviation sector in South Africa.
My recent research/experience leads to the disappointing conclusion that it's in rather poor shape. - The majority of aircraft fleets are 'not the most modern'. - The overall size of the available GA fleet appears to have shrunk dramatically. - Significant parts of the sector appear to have regressed back to rather parochial thinking (pre1994). - There seems to be a malaise in general organization and service levels. - Two positives: cost of flying is relatively cheap and the scenery in parts of SA is wonderful. When I recall the brilliant situation some time ago with a wide selection of decent aircraft and very professional, friendly organisations (circa 1998-2008!!), the current state is a pity. I wonder whether other pilots have similar or perhaps even different experiences in SA? (P.S. One caveat: my initial conclusions above apply to qualified pilots seeking to rent or lease GA aircraft. I.e. Please exclude dedicated flight training schools for professional students. They may be excellent.) |
