Recertify South African PPL in UK
Hi All,
I wonder if you can offer any advice please. I have a lapsed PPL from 1997 obtained in Capetown. Can I recertify my RSA licence in the uk with a South African instructor? This page makes it look quite easy to recertify, just not sure if it can be done in the UK. PPL Renewal for South Africans Many thanks Simon |
There are a few ZA qualified instructors in the UK who can probably help you out.
Irv Lee at Popham, and Robert Spencer at Azure / Cranfield are both such I think and quite easy to find online. Either should be able to sort you out, or tell you who can. G |
thanks G,
Happy new year |
Glad to help.
Incidentally, as you'll need a chunk of training regardless - if you have at-least 100hrs logged, you can do an EASA licence for an air law exam, training as required, and a skill test. That'll then be a much more versatile licence than your South African one. Any training school can do that for you. G |

To add to your post, we have recently had a lapsed ICAO PPL do a short course (training as required) on the advice of the CAA in an email to the holder as per your post. He passed the LST and on application for the EASA ppl, the CAA rejected the application saying that a full ppl course is required reflecting changes in 804. After many exchanges by the HoT, he now will have to do the extra training as if he was an ab-initio. Still not quite sure who is correct but anyone in a similar situation I would advise to apply for a log book assessment at Gatwick. |
