Graveyard and Airpark - Scotland
 

Hi all,

Diversification is said to be a key of modern businesses: so here's two ideas! Would be very interested in feedback, both on the concept and if anyone would actually buy!

1. Green funerals:

There seems to be a growing popularity for "green" funerals, sometime with plots in meadows, forests or by lakes. Would people be interested in plots at an airfield?

One site I saw with plots by a lake even charged extra for plots with a better view! So would you think plots near a runway threshold would be more desirable than ones "round the back of the hangar!", so to speak?

The "green" idea is no raised headstones, even no plot markers at all. So can't really see any safety risks.

2. Airparks.

If we were to get planning for a few houses, each on perhaps 1/2 an acre - without direct access to the runway, but with a planning condition that the owners kept an aircraft on the adjacent airfield - would people be interested? Talking Strathaven Airfield in central Scotland. Grass airfield, VFR only, 847ft amsl, 530m runway and no fuel.

For the record, decent serviced plots around here tend to go for around 100k.

Anyway, some ideas, interested in people's reactions.

Don't know about your area but most planning authorities these days have a pretty strict policy against allowing new groups of housing in rural areas. New houses have to be adjoining existing settlements.

Green Funeral thing sounds interesting, you could offer a menu of locations and services. Hell, if the famiy of the deceased were willing to throw enough bucks on the table I would gladly take several urn's full of ashes along on my weekend bimbles to help out with the gas money, it would be a win win, I get cheap flying and old uncle Bertie would still get a bit post-cremation flying hours in without the need for a medical which he undoubtedly wouldn't pass anyway, plus you wouldn't need a commercial ticket coz the "passengers" are all broo'n breed. :ok:

Yes! Have a runway in the middle of your plot, and the hangar(s) tucked away in the most impossible lost place. Then add a graveyard in one corner, some housing in the second, next a brothel, and a Tesco's or such in the last. You'll cover a large part of people's needs, thus getting a good part of their available budget, in a wide hinterland.

A mutual friend X Ray, already has an ashes scattering business (from the air). and has struggled in the cut throat, forgive the pun, funeral business. Anyone with a recently deceased relative, and wishes them scattered, in a place of choice, pm me:cool:

The airpark has some mileage. Planning may be an issue, but they did put 700 wind turbines just SW of you, so anything is possible.

You have a beautiful spot there, and a couple of houses, with access to the runway, might just work......

I thought - maybe - white marble runway markers with pilot and aircraft engraved on them like knights and their damsels in medieval cathedrals!

Would save white paint, that's got to be eco-friendly! And create an anti-slip surface!

(but might be an extra charge option!)

If you get some baby day care in, they could play with the shovels and dig the holes for you... Saving time and making money!

Airpark…yes!

Bad idea unless you build them to rent.
Never sell off bits of the airfield, your land is your best and often only way to a sustainable airfield. Make the land work for you to provide a long term income, landing fees will never pay the upkeep of the airfield.

Hanger space, workshops, anything rented, sheep, cabbages - take your choice but never sell off bits of land.
When its gone its gone.

Ahh, Jude. Takes me back to my Glasgow University Masters Degree, dissertation. 60,000 words, week three lost the lot because I did not back up my first stage 20,000 words:ugh:
