please help updating costs due inflation

Hello,

I just found this excellent post by englishal made in 2007 and wondered if anyone might contribute to help update average SEP running costs for 2015 ?

with thanks :)

Some general figures for a simple aeroplane like the 172:

Fixed costs:

Insurance: £2000 per year
Hangar: £2000 per year
Annual: £1000 per year
Star Annual (extra allowance per year): £700
Repairs and spares: £1000 per year
Total: £6700 pa

Based upon 200 hours per year gives: £33.50 per hour

Now the running costs:

Fuel: £40 per hour
Engine fund (£20,000/2000): £10 per hour
Extras (oil etc...): £5 per hour

So your total real running costs if you do 200 hours per year is: £88.50 per hour inclusive of pretty much all costs EXCEPT unforseen costs exceeding £1000 per year.

Pretty rough figures but seem about right in my experience. Most simple SEPs will be about the same (unless permit or µlight)

Well for starters we've never had an annual under £3k (inc vat) and the average is £4k to £5k, not because they overcharge they just do things properly. Parking £2.8k. Insurance £2.7k (full club use, £5million cover) no claims history. Engine replacement this year will be £16k fitted. PA28-181.

Do you mean operational or total costs? Purely operational I am actually at about 100 USD/flight hour at 130h/a for a 1967 172, total cost up slightly now to 170 USD/flight hour including depreciation for purchase and repairs. Costs will go up as I already know of a miscalculation of the costs related to engine - TCM spare part prices have been raised extremely. I expect total to be up to about 200 end of the year.

Ok, updated with the frame you set in the beginning:

Insurance: USD 600 per year
Hangar: USD 4,000 per year
Annual: USD 1,000 per year
Repairs and spares: USD 3,000 per year
Avionics upgrades: USD 500 per year
Purchase depreciation: USD 2,500 per Year
With 130 hours per year: USD 89 per hour

Fuel: USD 60 per hour (Mogas) / USD 85 per hour (Avgas)
Engine fund: 15 USD per hour
Extras: 5 USD per hour

totals
USD 169 per hour (Mogas) / USD 194 per hour (Avgas)
location: Africa

I mean both the fixed and variable costs of owning and running a SEP on avgas these days. It would be great if somebody could help me update the above list of figures.

Location will be needed.

Certain things will vary HUGELY depending on where in the world this is being considered.

Having just rebuilt a Scottish Aviation Bulldog, my costs per hour flown to date is about £2700 per hour (don't ask). Deducting refurbishing costs, that reduces to about £400 per hour to include everything, fuel, maintenance, insurance, hangarage etc. It would be less if I used the aeroplane more. I have no engine fund as I have just fitted a new engine, all hoses, all ancillaries, exhaust and totally overhauled the prop and CSU at a cost of about £35K. I calculate my costs per hour, not including fixed costs, to be in the region of £210.

Would you please define "average SEP"?

MrAverage 30th Mar 2015 16:31

Baleares

Forgive me for saying so but I think I did so in the first reply to your post?

baleares 30th Mar 2015 19:37

I was thinking Cessna 172. I am in Spain to be specific.

Apologies to MrAverage, I didn't process your first post fully.

Thanks to all for all input.
